The University of Virginia's Research Computing (RC) group seeks temporary employees for a variety of open positions. These positions support University faculty and researchers, assisting them with UVA Research Computing services to produce computing solutions within their fields of research, and provide system architecture and administrative support for UVA’s high-performance computing platforms. Below are some of the positions which temporary employees could assume:

Infrastructure Support Positions
  • HPC Administrator - experienced with MPI, Slurm and Infiniband. Someone who can work closely with our User Services team to provide support for traditional parallel processing
  • Linux Administrator - experienced with strong skills with Ansible and ethernet.
  • Windows Systems Administrator - to assist with our PHI and CUI VDI private cloud environment. The ideal candidate will have experience with Ansible and Windows.


Research Computing Associates/Computational Scientists

The ideal candidate has an outgoing personality with a passion for providing high-quality services, enjoys supporting and educating academic researchers, has some experience with academic computing, and is able to apply those skills to UVA’s research computing environment. We seek energetic self-starters and quick learners who enjoy technical problem solving and working on multiple projects simultaneously, have strong communication skills, and are team players. The ideal candidate will have research experience in bioinformatics, life science or data science.

The Research Computing group offers flexible telecommuting options, a friendly, diverse, and inclusive work environment in a small group (less than 25 staff), and a supportive workplace.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support for use of RC’s computing and storage services.
  • Create internal and user-facing technical documentation.
  • Assist senior staff with expanding educational and consulting offerings in their field of expertise, such as bioinformatics or data science and database usage.
  • Support senior staff with organizing outreach events to strengthen the research computing community at UVA and expand RC’s partnership with peer institutions under the NSF funded ACCORD (Assuring Controls Compliance of Research Data) program.




    Minimum Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree in life science, bioinformatics, or a related area.
    • Familiarity with data analysis in a Linux environment.
    • At least one year of relevant experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.


    Preferred Education and Experience:
    • Master of Science degree or research experience in life science, data science or a related area is preferred. At least 2 years of experience with R, Python, or Matlab programming.
    • Familiarity with computational bioinformatics or clinical data analysis workflows is a plus.
    • Experience with high-performance computing and basic shell scripting is a plus.
    • Familiarity with using database management systems (e.g. SQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB).
    • Teaching or user training experience in any computational research domain is a plus.
    • Familiarity with software container technology is a plus.


    Physical Demands:

    This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
