The L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for two faculty positions in Public Policy and Administration . We seek two exceptional colleagues and scholars, one at the assistant professor level and one at the associate professor level. Applicants with demonstrated excellence in research and teaching across a broad array of public policy and administration topics, as well as expertise and commitment to social equity, are welcome to apply. We also seek applicants who will contribute to the strength and diversity of our faculty and scholarship. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so is required. The anticipated start date for both positions will be either January or August 2023.

Position Qualifications:

Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in public administration, public policy, criminal justice, urban policy, or a related field at the time of appointment. Candidates must also have a scholarly record appropriate to the academic rank of the appointment that includes peer-reviewed scholarly publications, an active research agenda, and a strong teaching record. The successful candidate will have a research agenda that aligns with the mission of the Wilder School’s Research Institute for Social Equity (RISE). The Institute serves as a vehicle to advance racial equity and social equity through multidisciplinary scholarship, research, training, and engagement. Its goal is to be the national leader in advancing social equity through informing public policy, governance, and practice to improve conditions for marginalized voices within our society.

Candidates for both positions must be able to teach courses in our core and at least one of our concentration areas of our Ph.D. Program (Urban Policy, Criminal Justice Policy, Public Administration, or Public Policy). The standard teaching load for both positions is two courses in the fall semester and two in the spring. Experience teaching in both face-to-face and online settings is a plus. All candidates should show a high level of commitment to student engagement, including mentoring and advising doctoral students.


Position A: (Assistant Professor position-tenure track) - brief description

In addition to the requirements listed in the “Position Qualifications” section above, for the Assistant Professor position, we are especially interested in candidates with advanced knowledge in the areas of statistics or economics as it relates to public policy analysis. The ideal candidate will have established a strong and promising research agenda and trajectory.

Position B: (Associate Professor position-tenure eligible) - brief description

In addition to the requirements listed in the “Position Qualifications” section above, for the Associate Professor position, demonstrated success teaching and advising at the doctoral level is required. We especially seek candidates with an interest in academic administration. The ideal candidate should be a highly respected scholar with a national reputation for excellent scholarship. The successful candidate will also be regarded as a leader in their respective field.

The Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at VCU has over 40 full-time faculty and is currently ranked #35 among Public Affairs graduate programs by US News and World Report. Our mission includes engaging students and leaders to understand and solve challenges in our world, advancing research that informs public policy and decision-making to improve our communities, and collaborating with communities through innovative partnerships to enhance the quality of life. In addition to the Public Policy and Administration degree, we offer academic degrees in urban planning, criminal justice, homeland security and emergency preparedness, and public administration.
