Job Description

Virginia Tech invites applicants for multiple tenured or tenure-track faculty positions at any rank (assistant professor, associate professor and professor) in Quantum Systems. The successful candidates will have expertise in technologies associated with quantum sensors and devices for future real-world solutions in application areas such as positioning, navigation and timing, magnetometry, electrometry, mass spectrometry, chemical sensing, optomechanics, and gravitometry. The positions will be anchored at the Virginia Tech National Security Institute (in either Arlington or Blacksburg), and the candidates will hold tenure-line appointments in an academic department in either the College of Engineering or the College of Science depending upon background and personal preference.

Quantum science and engineering is one of four major research frontiers at Virginia Tech https://www.research.vt.edu/research-frontiers/quantum.html and it is expected that candidates will join university-wide efforts such as the Virginia Tech Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering https://ictas.vt.edu/center-for-quantum-information-science-and-engineering.html and the recently announced Center of Quantum Architecture and Software Development within the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus https://vtx.vt.edu/articles/2021/11/northrup-quantum.html. Virginia Tech is a member of the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C) https://quantumconsortium.org and by virtue of our locations in Arlington and Blacksburg, Virginia, faculty will be in close proximity to federal agencies, national laboratories, and federally-funded research and development centers.

The Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VTNSI) is a university thematic research institute https://www.research.vt.edu/institutes.html, with the mission of meeting the pressing needs of the defense and intelligence communities by developing their future workforce and advancing interdisciplinary research, technology, and policy. We envision a future state where VTNSI is the Nation’s preeminent academic organization that intersects integrated basic and applied research and development with experiential learning to advance National Security. Given the appointment at the VTNSI, successful candidates must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.

Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to Virginia Tech's strategic plan of inclusion.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field by date of hire, and practical government or industry experience is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a vigorous and well-funded research program; continue development of scholarly activities and professional capabilities; and actively participate in institute, department, college, and university governance.

Inquiries about the positions should be directed to the Executive Director of the Virginia Tech National Security Institute, Dr. Eric G. Paterson, egp@vt.edu.
