Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Trades Mechanic Supervisor / Trades Technician IV (00033). The successful candidate will supervise and provide direction while also performing skilled labor in a multi-trade, multi-shop environment. This role is essential for providing both preventative and corrective maintenance services necessary for maintaining the physical infrastructure at Longwood University. The primary focus will be on the plumbing shop at Longwood University, as well as the Real Estate Foundation's off-campus apartment complexes and other properties.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Supervise and perform corrective maintenance in the various trade groups, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, small appliances, and controls.
  • Manage and complete various painting tasks, ensuring proper preparation, application, cleanup, and final inspection are completed within the requester's timeframe. Additionally, provide occasional cost estimates for jobs.
  • Oversee and conduct preventative maintenance based on inspections or work orders generated by the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), ensuring that each item is maintained in accordance with or exceeds the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Accurately record labor hours, material costs, and inventory usage within the CMMS.
  • Maintain an adequate stock of supplies and tools for tasks, ensuring that they are organized, neat, and stored in their designated locations.
  • Perform work at a craftsman level.
  • Ensure that work is conducted with minimal disruption to both residential life and university activities.


Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license.
  • A master-level license in one of the specified trades is required, with multiple licenses or certifications preferred.
  • Extensive experience working in a multi-trade environment.
  • Ability to supervise a multi-trade work team, providing the necessary leadership and technical expertise to maximize effectiveness.
  • Extensive experience supervising personnel in a multi-trade environment is preferred.
  • Extensive experience in appliance repair and maintenance, such as stoves, refrigerators, ice makers, dishwashers, washers, and dryers is preferred.
  • Extensive experience in the maintenance of apartment complexes is preferred.
  • The ability to respond to call-ins during non-working hours and report to work as needed during inclement weather, staff shortages, etc.


Additional Information:

This is a full-time, classified, non-exempt position in a pay band 4. A successful criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
