Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services in the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.
Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery at VCU/VCU Health System is recruiting for a part-time, open rank, non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Emergency General Surgery. The faculty member must possess demonstrated interests in research that may complement or expand the division’s research portfolio including but not limited to, outcomes research, basic science research, translational research, injury and violence prevention research. The faculty member will also support the division with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Position Responsibilities
Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Emergency General Surgery, and applied anatomy and physiology.
Clinical Clinical responsibility will be in the care of the trauma and acute care patients on the MCV campus of VCU, community sites, and any other facilities in the VCU Network. This position will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.
Research Faculty member must aim to establish a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication and external funding. The incumbent is expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research programs in at VCU. In addition, this position will mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in their research endeavors.
Service Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.) The incumbent’s clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.
Required Qualifications
Board certification or eligibility in general surgery
Critical care experience required
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in surgical critical care strongly preferred
Experience in global surgery with a commitment to solicit external funding
Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
Record of external funding or proposal submissions to obtain funding
