Join the University of Virginia Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (UVA DDEI) as the inaugural Tribal Liaison. We are working as a community to engage in meaningful and reciprocal relations with sovereign Indigenous Nations and Tribal communities in what is now called the United States. The Tribal Liaison position was created to serve two interconnected needs: one, to act as a resource for Tribal communities, especially the sovereign Nations, in their relationships with UVA, and second, to coordinate initiatives relating to Native American and Indigenous peoples across departments, schools, and administrative units at UVA. Reporting to the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Partnerships, the Tribal Liaison will join a team of dedicated professionals in the UVA DDEI and will collaborate extensively with the Coordinator of Virginia Indian Programs at Virginia Humanities to ensure meaningful outreach and communication with Virginia Tribes.

The core responsibility areas for the Tribal Liaison are efforts to build relationships with Native American and Indigenous communities, especially those in Virginia; coordinate programs across UVA to educate faculty, staff, and students on Native American issues; and serve Native American and Indigenous faculty, staff, and especially students by building pipelines in Tribal communities and supporting current students.

  • Bachelor’s degree, yet relevant qualifying experience (broadly defined) will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with Tribal communities, serving needs, respecting sovereignty, and promoting well-being
  • Experience with Tribal protocols of sovereignty, self-determination, and governance
  • Understanding of Native American histories, Tribal relations with US government, especially with Virginia and/or South and Eastern Tribes, and/or with academic institutions (universities, museums, libraries)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (online and offline)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to implement diversity, equity, and inclusion programs focused on community needs
  • Ability to travel as needed to support tribal relations, particularly in throughout the state of Virginia as well as other geographies

  • 2 years of relevant experience working with Tribal communities and/or academic institutions whether through prior or current employment or other experiences (broadly defined and the experience does not need to be in a compensated or traditional “work” position)
  • Sustained record of engagement with Virginia Tribal Nations, serving needs, respecting sovereignty, and promoting well-being of Tribal citizens
  • Experience with protocols of sovereignty, self-determination, and governance in Tribal Nations of Virginia
  • Understanding of Virginia Tribal histories, relationships with state and federal governments, and academic institutions (universities, museums, libraries), especially UVA and related institutions in Virginia
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated through experience of online and offline communications
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Experience implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs focused on community needs
  • Familiarity with institutions of higher education

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position is eligible for a remote work plan up to but not exceeding 2 days per week and is located in Charlottesville, VA.
