Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

This posting covers tutoring at all Virginia Peninsula Community College sites and campuses. These positions are hourly wage and do not guarantee a certain number of hours per week. The incumbent/s will be working on an as-needed basis; however, all Tutors will have assigned hours to be present for tutoring.
The Position:
Under the supervision of the Tutoring Coordinator:
Provide in-person individual tutoring to students requesting academic assistance in college courses in a face-to-face setting.
Participate in all required tutor training and workshops.
Provide the Tutoring Coordinator with a schedule of availability that does not interfere with class schedule. Any schedule changes must be reported to the Tutoring Coordinator 24h in advance.
Communicate with the Tutoring Coordinator about tutee absences and lateness, as well as any additional issues that may arise.
Maintain records of student contacts and statistics.
Communicate clearly and effectively with students from all educational levels, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
Exercise patience in all learning situations.
Maintain tutor/student confidentiality of all academic and personal information.
Uphold high standards, avoiding falsification and cheating.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Tutors must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and be in good academic standing
The position is part time and as such cannot exceed 29 hours per week and is not eligible for health or leave benefits. However, the position may offer educational benefits through our professional development and educational assistance policies.
Minimum Qualifications:
Open to currently enrolled Virginia Peninsula Community College students
(dual-enrollment students are not eligible) with a minimum cumulative GPA
of 2.7 and in good academic standing.
Faculty referral by an Instructor in the subject area in which they tutor
Document an earned A or B in courses to be tutored with transcripts, if
necessary.
Participate in a hands-on tutoring demonstration for math and foreign language applicants who have not taken recent math and foreign language courses at Virginia Peninsula Community College.
