The University of Virginia is looking to hire a Vivarium Supervisor. Vivarium Supervisors are responsible for directing the activities of the animal care unit. They direct the daily operation of the Vivarium, both supervising animal care staff and working closely with veterinary staff. Vivarium Supervisors coordinate activities of animal husbandry. They manage compliance with procedures, protocols, University policies, and federal and state regulations. They provide training in proper lab techniques and perform checks to ensure quality and cleanliness of labs and animal rooms. Vivarium Supervisors report to Assistant Department Supervisors and typically work independently in alignment with research goals.
Duties include:
Oversee Vivarium operations, reporting animal health and welfare concerns to veterinary staff and reporting any equipment failure or facilities problems to the appropriate staff members.
Supervise animal caregiver staff in accordance with University policies and federal guidelines. Assess staff performance, productivity, and adherence to procedures and policies, in consultation with Human Resources staff, Assistant Department Supervisor, and/ Director of Comparative Medicine.
Train animal caregivers and scientific staff in appropriate practices and standard operating procedures. Schedule employees to ensure proper Vivarium coverage.
Oversee rodent animal health surveillance programs and coordinate submission of samples with diagnostic labs.
Ensure proper stock of animal care items, annual certification of HEPA filtered equipment, and hazardous material signage throughout the lab.
Administer all University and government policies related to Vivarium operations. Report matters of research non-compliance to the Office of Animal Welfare.
Perform duties of Animal Caregivers, such as maintenance and oversight of animal health, performance of tests, animal husbandry, and animal biosafety as needed.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements Education: GED/High School Diploma required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience: Five years of related experience Licensure: LAT Certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)
Vaccination : This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002 .
Physical Demands Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
