Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities


The Winn Awards Communications Manager role will provide essential communication support to the Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Awards program now housed at the VCU Massey Cancer Center. This role will assist with and be responsible for the following:
  • Growing and developing a variety of content for social media channels, marketing programs, and resources and raising awareness of the Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Awards by creating and sharing interesting, relevant, and engaging content; Identify new and innovative ways to enhance and expand social media presence and outreach to various stakeholders
  • Managing the Robert A. Winn Diversity in Clinical Trials Awards website, which includes creating a variety of content, ensuring that the site is fresh and timely, accurate, representative of our varied bodies of work, and engaging to a variety of audiences
  • Coordinating and creating regular, topical, and timely content for our blog; working with faculty and staff to author blog and Medium posts
  • Designing and editing large- and small-scale products and publications
  • Researching new possibilities for outreach and collaboration with partner organizations. Identifying strategies to engage with national media outlets, reporters, and social media influencers
  • Producing videos for social media, events, and other marketing opportunities. Developing and compiling monthly reports and web analytics to inform content creation; setting benchmarks and goals to track progress and growth
  • Maintaining and upholding our branding and messaging guidelines in all digital and printed
    materials
  • Providing ongoing support with special projects for the Massey public relations and marketing communications team
  • Assisting in special events planning and execution, promotions, community relations and public relations activities
  • Providing assistance on editing and placing news releases, developing story ideas and writing feature articles for the unit or college
  • Developing timelines to ensure publishing of media is completed as required and the content and delivery is appropriately planned for target audience
  • Other duties as assigned by the Winn Awards and Massey communications leadership


Minimum Hiring Standards

  • Massey Cancer Center supports a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment. The candidate will demonstrate experience that shows their commitment to fostering such an environment.
  • Expertise and commitment to DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion)
    • Commitment to reducing disparities
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or relevant field
  • Fluency in:
    • Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Acrobat), basic HTML
    • Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and YouTube
    • Basic HTML and website publishing, especially via WordPress
    • Mailchimp email experience
    • Experience creating compelling, engaging, and ROI-driven digital content
  • Experience building social media channels and executing social media strategy for maximum engagement, particularly for mission-driven non-profits or through cause-based marketing
  • Ability to work effectively and accurately under pressure and to self manage and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with all levels of management and team members
  • Ability to work independently; a self-starter with a high level of motivation, creativity, and proactivity
  • Understanding of the importance of clearly defined writing

Preferred Hiring Standards

  • 2-5 years of experience working in a similar or related position, non-profit experience preferred
  • Other CMS skills are a plus
  • Other database skills outside of Mailchimp are a plus
  • Photography and video creation and editing skills are a plus
