Description for Candidates:

  • To manage functions including strategic planning, procurement, development, implementation, maintenance, operation and security of VDOT's cartographic systems. Assist VDOT, state and federal agencies, private sector and the public by producing various cartographic and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) products. Edit and maintain critical geospatial data, and produce cartographic products.

    How you will contribute:
  • Client Support and Strategic Direction: Manage client and agency relations. Investigate and evaluate client product needs and determine VDOT and the Cartography team's ability to meet those needs. Answer inquiries regarding cartographic products and geographical information. Coordinate GIS activities on database development and structures associated with GIS coverage.
  • File Management: Update Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) graphics and Geographic Information System (GIS) files for base maps and securely transfer data between different software environments in a shared network. Translate data between CADD, graphic, and GIS systems and convert data into vector and raster files.
  • Pre-publication Map Revision: Edit and proof maps and files. Ensure that products are clean, legible and error free. Consult with clients on major project objectives and develop plans for their approval and ensure needs are met.
  • Technical Management: Review and revise policies for inclusion on county, state and scenic maps. Investigate mapping issues and recommend actions so the department can best serve the public while protecting its intellectual property regarding maps and mapping data. Participate on GIS and Policy committee as needed.

  • Knowledge of system analysis, design and development.
  • Knowledge of the stages of high quality map printing and publishing.
  • Knowledge of tools and techniques for creating, editing, and using extensive, high quality, accurate and detailed GIS and CADD databases for cartographic production.
  • Skill in providing exemplary customer service.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include Adobe Creative Suite, ArcView, MicroStation SE, GIS, GIS Pro and CADD.

  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with stages of high quality map printing and publishing.
  • Experience with system analysis, design and development.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include Adobe Creative Suite, ArcView, MicroStation SE, GIS, GIS Pro and CADD.

  • Additional Considerations:
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Geographic Science, Cartographic Science, Information Systems or related field desired.
  • Experience managing technical staff and planning; and developing technical projects.
  • Experience using Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) software, ArcGIS software, Bently MicroStation CADD software, and Adobe Illustrator graphic software.
