Job Duties

$3,500 Sign On Bonus or $10,000 Student Loan Repayment may be available for eligible new hires

Provides evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Screens for sick call, administers medications, and provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed. Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan. Records all pertinent information into the medical record. Interfaces with other departments as needed. Promotes continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing. Nurses must have the ability to work hours, days and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Current Virginia license or eligibility for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or other states participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact)

Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care

Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals

Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care

Additional Considerations

Experience working in a VADOC medical corrections setting

Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment

Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care
