Job Description

This faculty appointment will support the College’s Shelter Medicine and Surgery Clerkship, a core clerkship (i.e., required of all students in the clinical years) in the VMCVM curriculum. The veterinarian in this role will work to enhance the educational opportunities for our students in animal shelters as well as primary care settings to benefit the health and wellbeing of the animals and residents in the New River Valley area. The clerkship currently partners with multiple animal shelters and non-profit organizations in the New River Valley.

Students on this clerkship will be involved in spay and neuter programs, but will also perform other medical and surgical procedures. The successful candidate will be directly involved in the clinical instruction of veterinary students alongside another faculty member of the College. Instruction will include, but is not limited to, supervising and training students in surgical and anesthetic procedures, medical workups leading to diagnosis and treatment, and preventive care including vaccinations, dental care, and minor surgical procedures. The successful candidate will be expected to lead rounds with students each week, ideally at the end of each day, as time permits. Additionally, they will be responsible for assessing students’ performance in alignment with the COE standards to ensure their continuous development and adherence to professional competencies.

The successful candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching and to exceptional patient management and client services. They will also be expected to participate in continuing education programs of the College and participate in faculty governance activities as needed and appropriate.

Required Qualifications

DVM or equivalent degree
Significant clinical experience

Preferred Qualifications

Board eligibility or board certification in a veterinary specialty recognized by AVMA, American Board of Veterinary Specialists (ABVS)
Track record of teaching excellence
Prior experience in shelter setting and/or high-quality high-volume spay neuter
