Job Duties

The Virginia State Police is seeking to hire an Oracle Database Administrator at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The Oracle Database Administrator serves as the database administrator to support and maintain the Virginia State Police's Oracle database and application environments.

The employee in this position will be performing database implementation; performance tuning; problem diagnosis and resolution; and database backup and recovery.

•Works with the software engineering team to provide support of the Oracle relational database environment.
•Provides consultation on relational database design, implementation, and technical issues to our systems development team.
•Provides recommendations for upgrades to Oracle relational databases.
•Provides recommendations for database security.
•Provides support for database backup and recovery.
•Works with the Department's Information Security Officer (ISO) and management to establish policies and procedures for database security.
•Monitors and optimizes the performance of application systems databases.
•Identifies and resolves relational database problems.
•Contacts and informs systems development staff on proper design and implementation of relational databases.
•Works with development staff to troubleshoot and monitor systems for potential problems.
•Installs, configures, and maintains Oracle system software and related products to ensure correct upgrades, patches and fixes are in place.
•Works with the development team to provide support of the SQL Server relational database environment.
•Provides recommendations for upgrades to SQL Server relational databases.
•Provides support to database backup and recovery.

Minimum Qualifications

•Considerable knowledge of Oracle database design, administration, utility, and tools; of database performance and tuning; of database system and security management; and of data migration in a Solaris/Unix environment.
•Skills in the use of laptop computers and using standard Microsoft Office applications.
•Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of database systems management; to develop Unix scripts and write/develop database standards and documentation; to implement security measures to safeguard relational databases; to establish and maintain an efficient technology environment; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing in English; to work independently and as a member of a team; and to provide training to others on new techniques and solving technical problems.
•High school graduate or equivalent.
