Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Giving at the University of Mary Washington is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy to identify, cultivate, and secure support for University of Mary Washington initiatives from corporate partners and private foundations. This role will foster and steward relationships that advance the University’s mission, priorities, and fundraising goals. The Director works closely with Advancement colleagues, faculty, administrators, and staff to identify funding opportunities, write compelling grant proposals, manage grant reporting, and oversee corporate sponsorship programs across all units.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Knowledge of advancement functions, including fundraising campaigns, preferably within a higher education environment
  • Record of ethical decision-making and unquestionable integrity
  • Ability to function both autonomously and as a team member
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information in a discreet and courteous manner
  • Willingness to travel including overnight
  • Proficiency with database and information system technologies, data analytics tools, and prospect research tools

Required Experience:

  • Professional experience in higher education fundraising or nonprofit fundraising, grant-writing, and/or related field.
  • Experience working with confidential information.
  • Successful record of managing multiple and complex projects, meeting deadlines, effectively working with a wide variety of colleagues and collaborators, and flexibly adapting to changing priorities and needs.

 

Additional Considerations:

KSAs

  • Experience with Banner CRM
  • Knowledge of financial regulations and tax laws pertaining to corporate giving, sponsorships and private grants
  • Ability to anticipate needs of internal and external stakeholders and be both proactive and responsive
  • Understanding of higher education fundraising
  • Experience building relationships with foundation program managers and corporate partners
  • Proven success writing successful grant applications
  • Appreciation of and enthusiasm for UMW’s public liberal arts mission
  • Ability to inspire confidence of diverse constituents and partners

EDUCATION
Master's Degree

Experience

  • At least four years experience in corporate and foundation fundraising in higher education and/or nonprofit settings
  • Demonstrated success in securing and managing private grants
  • Experience with donor databases and prospect research tools
  • Demonstrated success in securing five-, six-, and/or seven-figure gifts from corporate and foundation sources
  • Understanding of tax law as it applies to corporate and foundation giving
