With a population of just over 53,000, Harrisonburg is one of the most diverse communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. JMU is a selective, public institution with a growing national reputation for offering experiences that lead to an outstanding education and inclusive environment for students, faculty and staff. The student body includes approximately 20,000 undergraduate and 1,900 graduate students, with over 1,000 full-time instructional faculty.

General Information:

JMU Talent Development (TD) is seeking an undergraduate or graduate intern to assist the department with special projects related to the training and development of AP Faculty, classified staff, and wage employees at JMU.

Projects may include, but are not limited to:
• Researching competencies related to employment at JMU and making recommendations for updating the current model.
• Creating an assessment, based on the competencies, that assists employees in making decisions regarding their professional development needs.
• Assisting with the development and possible delivery of content.

Providing support for the team, as needed, by:
• Staging and resetting training rooms
• Preparing handouts
• Assisting with marketing efforts
• Reviewing training evaluations and offering recommendations

This is a part-time wage position working an average of 15 hours per week over the school year (32 weeks) with no benefits. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background investigation. Students with strong organizational and business analysis skills are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Talent Development’s mission is to grow the talents of JMU A/P faculty, classified staff, and wage employees. This is accomplished by creating/hosting content on-site or online and recommending/funding content outside of JMU.

These development opportunities are based on competencies related specifically to employment at JMU. Once completed, the workshops are then evaluated for effectiveness to ensure the department continues to meet the needs of the community.

To do this well, the Talent Development team is continuously reviewing and updating its methods.

Specifically, the intern will analyze and recommend methods to achieve the following business objectives:

1. An updated competency model that identifies those skills and abilities required to be successful at JMU.
2. A competency assessment that allows employees to identify their professional development needs.

The selected student will work directly with the Director of Talent Development to establish objectives and ensure that work stays in line with those objectives.

The intern will also have opportunities to contribute to other TD projects based on their specific strengths and abilities. The intern will be expected to provide event support as needed.

Qualifications:

The successful student applicant will demonstrate the following qualifications:

1. Be enrolled as a student at JMU for the Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 semesters
2. Experience with research and synthesis of information
3. Excellent writing and analytical skills
