General Description:
Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) invites applications for qualified individuals to join our faculty to support the mission and vision of the largest institution of higher education in Virginia. The faculty position is available beginning with the 2025-2026 academic year. The primary responsibility of a faculty member at NOVA is to provide quality instruction and animal care for a variety of species. NOVA faculty are expected to excel in teaching strategies and classroom management that fully engage students in a classroom, laboratory, or online platform, and engage students in individual conferences and related activities. NOVA faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity in order to build stronger citizens within the community. All faculty must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes at any of the College’s campuses or off-site locations.

Duties and Tasks: Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month teaching faculty positions carry a normal teaching load of 12-15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. This position will split the workload between teaching and animal care as the Veterinarian in Charge of the facility. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.

Specific to this role:

Perform physical examinations and maintain Electronical Medical Records (EMRs) alongside students for small animal shelter patients in the veterinary teaching hospital
Evaluate in-house diagnostics (cytology, radiographs, bloodwork, etc.) and create treatment plans for veterinary teaching hospital patients
Perform soft tissue surgeries, evaluate dental radiographs and COHATs, and perform multi-rooted dental extractions.
Work with students to improve their medical SOAPs, examination skills, surgical assisting, and hands-on technician skills with patients.
Create sedation protocols for small animal patients and be familiar with up-to-date anesthesia protocols.
Aid in creating and maintaining standard operating procedures for medical treatment of small animal patients in the teaching hospital.

Essential Functions: NOVA faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports in a timely manner; teach the courses using established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations; answer emails in a responsible fashion; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.

Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.

Minimum Qualifications:

KSAs:

Proficiency with soft tissue surgery, dentistry with extractions, digital radiography, ultrasound techniques and emergency and critical care procedures.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Excellent analytical skills.
Excellent oral/written communication skills.
Ability to use instructional technology.
Ability to work with live animals which may include large animals, small mammals, exotic animals and animal husbandry.

Required Qualifications:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Qualifying degree must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution and an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited institution.
Active, unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia licensure as a veterinarian. If current licensure is with another state or is not active, then you must be able obtain or renew licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
A minimum of two years of full-time veterinary clinical experience, including surgery and dentistry. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalency.
Current rabies vaccination.

Prior experience teaching in higher education which may include classroom, hybrid, and online classes.
Experience with, or commitment to, supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
Experience in pharmacology, surgery, large animal medicine, promoting advanced nursing techniques, animal dentistry, exotics, lab animal/zoo medicine, and laboratory procedures.
