About the Department:

Scalia Law is ranked #31 among all law schools, #2 among law schools in the D.C. area, and #2 among law schools in Virginia. This achievement follows two remarkable fundraising successes: gifts totaling $30 million, which named the law school in honor of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, and a bequest of more than $50 million from the late Judge Allison M. About the Position:

George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School invites applications from faculty who are tenured at other universities for lateral faculty positions to begin August 2026. Tenured positions will need to follow normal tenured faculty hiring processes at the Law School and the University.

Applicants should have a record of outstanding achievement in legal scholarship and teaching, and outstanding contributions to a law school’s intellectual and scholarly community.

Responsibilities:

Teaching:

  • Prepares for classes, is available for consultation about those classes, assesses student performance in those classes, and remains current in subjects being taught in accordance with ABA law school accreditation standards. Effective teaching requires a combination of course and curricular materials, developed learning outcomes, and thoughtful assignments and assessments designed to promote student learning.

Scholarship:

  • Engages in research and scholarship through original contributions that advance the Law School’s disciplines, or to the integration of the Law School’s disciplines with other fields, or by the application of the Law School’s disciplines to legal policy and/or the legal profession. Examples include, but are not limited to, publications, including journal articles, books, and book chapters, etc.; sponsored research activity and grant and contract awards; conferences and other scholarly presentations; and other activities that enhance the Law School and the University's scholarly recognition and reputation.

Service:

  • Engages in service to the Law School and university community, including participating in the governance of the Law School, curricular development, and other institutional responsibilities as required by the ABA law school accreditation standards; provides service to the profession, including working with judges and practicing lawyers to improve the profession; and provides service to the public, including participation in pro bono activities. Examples include, but are not limited to, activity such as attendance at faculty meetings and faculty workshops; participation in faculty personnel matters; curricular development; support for co-curricular student experiences; mentoring colleagues; chairing and co-chairing committees; leading or actively participating in university-wide initiatives; leading invited or peer-reviewed workshops; leadership in related professional organizations, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a related field;
  • At least one of the following degrees: J.D., LL.M., J.S.D., S.J.D., Ph.D., or D.Phil.;
  • Licensed to practice law in one or more jurisdictions;
  • Significant teaching, scholarship, and service experience sufficient to have been awarded tenure by another institution;
  • Demonstrated experience producing scholarly works;
  • Significant experience teaching first year and/or large section law classes and seminar courses;
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and interest in one or more areas of law;
  • Exceptional research and writing abilities;
  • Highly developed analytical skills; and
  • Excellent verbal and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with interdisciplinary scholarship;
  • Prior clerkship and/or law practice experience; and
  • Prior policy work.
