Job Description

The Academic and Career Advisor helps students with analyzing interests and abilities, choosing a major, changing majors, selecting courses, meeting requirements, and succeeding academically. Our Advisors work effectively with a diverse population, including students, faculty, and staff. They will handle a large number of inquiries by phone, email, and in person while maintaining a professional and mature demeanor. They are professionals who enjoy working with students in a higher education setting.

The following are customary duties for this position, but are not to be interpreted as all-inclusive:
- Provide academic and career advising services to approximately 350-500 engineering students
- Deliver accurate information and advice to students about majors/minors and course options
- Identify educational and career options appropriate for each student and assist with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications
- Monitor academic progress of students and determine satisfactory progress toward transferring to an undergraduate degree granting program
- Identify current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g. study skills, tutoring, counseling) and refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance
- Support class scheduling, enrollment, and systems related to class registration
- Maintain student files and records; document all pertinent student information, assuring security and confidentiality
- Interpret and explain college and university policies and procedures
- Participate in recruiting activities for the university, college, and department, including but not limited to new student orientation, new student welcome, change of major information sessions, engineering open house, course request group advising, plan of study workshops, etc.
- Communicate in a highly professional manner with department faculty, university administrators, researchers, staff, students, and campus visitors


Typical work schedule: 1 day in person, 4 days remote with some occasional in person events.

Required Qualifications

- Master’s degree from an accredited university
- Academic advising experience, classroom instructional experience, counseling, student affairs and/or other relevant experience
- Exceptional interpersonal communication skills with the ability to develop and deliver public speeches with confidence to large and small groups
- Proven computer skills, particularly related to data management, and proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of applications
- Knowledge of mechanisms of student retention, student development theories, career development strategies, and recruitment strategies
- Excellent organizational skills, creativity, flexibility, and self-motivation
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both a team environment and independently, with sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences
- Record of maintaining confidentiality of personal information, especially for anything governed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Preferred Qualifications

- Professional academic advising experience in a higher education setting
- Familiarity with student information systems
- Experience with first-year undergraduate students
- Educational planning, and/or programming experience at the college level
- STEM related background would be beneficial but not required
