Arts and Sciences Learning Design & Technology (LDT) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for an Accessib le Design Coordinator . LDT i s a faculty support unit working in course design, specialized learning spaces, and applications of emerging learning technologies. LDT is a welcoming team committed to support of inclusive and accessible teaching and learning in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (CGAS).

The Accessible Design Coordinator is a new role that will provide logistical, pedagogical, and technical support in implementing accessibility accommodations in CGAS courses. This role will also collaborate with faculty, graduate instructors, and diverse campus partners to design inclusive and accessible instruction. The Accessible Design Coordinator will employ excellent organization and communication skills to collaborate with diverse partners across the University. In this work, they will leverage their commitment to and knowledge of academic accommodations, digital accessibility, and instructional design to facilitate accessible teaching and learning experiences. This position will work closely with the A&S Learning Design and Technology team, the Student Disability Access Center (SDAC) , and other disability-, academic- and faculty-support offices across the campus.

Responsibilities will include :

Faculty-facing Support

  • in collaboration with CGAS and SDAC partners, develop effective processes to support faculty in implementing disability-related course accommodations in the College
  • provide faculty-facing logistical support to ensure effective implementation of accommodations, particularly in large-enrollment courses
  • consult with faculty members to enhance accessibility of course materials, activities and assessments
  • facilitate faculty exploration of inclusive and accessible teaching approaches, technologies, and spaces across diverse modalities, with a focus on in-person learning.
  • promote proactive remediation of course materials in collaboration with campus partners


Faculty Learning

  • design and deliver materials, training, and workshops to faculty and staff on Universal Design for Learning and other inclusive pedagogical approaches
  • deliver proactive guidance to faculty on the effective implementation of academic accommodations
  • foster a culture of collaboration in support of accessible and inclusive teaching in CGAS
  • promote research-based and innovative approaches to maximize flexibility, inclusion, and equitable access to learning.
  • regularly assess outcomes of faculty support to improve teaching and learning


Outreach

  • contribute to University efforts to promote accessible teaching and learning
  • collaborate with colleagues in LDT, SDAC, and throughout the university to develop effective processes and procedures
  • maintain up to date knowledge of research-based practices in accessible design and digital accessibility


Other duties as assigned.

This role reports to the Director of A&S Learning Design & Technology (LDT).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three years of instructional computing OR related experience (instructional design; digital accessibility support; faculty development; teaching, administration, or accessibility and disability support in an educational setting). Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.


Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have many of the following qualifications .

  • Demonstrated commitment to facilitating inclusive, accessible learning in educational settings
  • Masters degree or beyond in a relevant field
  • Four or more years of experience in instructional design and/or faculty development
  • Successful experience employing and facilitating use of research-based accessible course design practices including Universal Design for Learning
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies, digital accessibility and related standards and best practices


  • Familiarity with disability and course accommodations in higher education settings


  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining collaborative working relationships with partners
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications, Canvas LMS, and popular instructional technologies
  • Readiness to learn and use new and emerging software or technology tools
  • IAAP certification ( e.g. CPACC, WAS) or other digital accessibility qualification
  • Project Management experience
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey complex ideas and solutions to individuals without experience in the accessibility realm

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA and is eligible for a hybrid schedule (3 days/week in office) outside of peak periods of in-person demand.

The anticipated start date is August 2024 . Anticipated Hiring Range: $65,000-$80,000, commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt level, benefited position. For more information on the benefits at UVA, visit hr.virginia.edu/benefits.
