VHCC is seeking a detail oriented and experienced financial accountant to join our team. This role is vital to ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the college’s financial operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting and financial reporting and excellent analytical skills.


Position Responsibilities:
  • Reporting directly to the Director of Budget and Finance, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations and requirements of all appropriate accounting oversight agencies.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Preparing monthly financial reconciliations for state, local and grant funds
  • Monitoring grant expenditures and preparing reimbursement requests; serving as liaison to grant directors and staff
  • Managing inventory, including identifying and recording fixed and bulk assets, maintaining accurate asset records, and completing biennial physical inventories
  • Auditing Small Purchase Charge Card (SPCC) transactions and serving as back-up SPCC Administrator.
  • Assisting with annual ARMICS (Agency Risk Management and Internal Control Standards) evaluation and certification.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines to include those from the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts, Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minium of Associates Degree in Accounting
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements
  • Experience with automated financial systems, such as PeopleSoft Administrative Information System (AIS), Cardinal, or other Oracle-based programs
  • Knowledge of financial statement preparation and footnote preparation
  • Proven ability to produce accurate, complete, and timely financial information and reports
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing needs and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Demonstrated success completing tasks and projects on time
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze financial data and perform complex reconciliations
  • Ability to interpret policies, exercise sound judgment, and make informed decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and work on multiple assignments
  • Strong time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Team-oriented mindset
Additional Considerations:

  • 5 years of progressively relevant experience in accounting or a combination of experience and education in accounting, finance or related field
  • Experience with of ARMICS and GASB standards
  • Working knowledge of GASB standards
  • Familiarity with state or College systems such as eVA, Cardinal, SIS, AIS, Perceptive Content, etc.
  • Prior Experience working with state or local governmental accounting

The selected candidate is required to file a Statement of Economic Interests form pursuant to the Code of Virginia § 2.2-3114, as a condition of employment. Additionally, the statement is to be filed annually by February 1. The selected candidate is required to complete the Statement of Economic Interest training within 60 days of employment and every yearly thereafter.
