Job Duties

The Adult Education Teacher is responsible for providing quality instruction that meets the needs of the student in the areas of basic adult education and GED standards. Additionally, to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements.

This position provides individual and group instruction to male supervisees at Greensville Correctional Center. Successful candidate will maintain classroom, equipment and inventories; ensure compliance with all DOC regulations; maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science or other relevant subject.

Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors. The ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students and aides in a classroom setting; the ability to maintain accurate records. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs. Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure.

Must possess a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education or qualify for reciprocity from another state.

Please note you are responsible for any renewal points to maintain a teaching license under the guidelines of Virginia Department of Education to comply with the requirements for your continued employment in this position. If you are seeking reciprocity from another state, you must submit all documentation for a Virginia Teaching License within 90 days of employment and satisfy all requirements within a year.

Additional Considerations

Master’s degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field. Prefer experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting. Prefer knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult correctional education. Knowledge of correctional education classroom management. The ability to supervise students and inmate aides in the correctional facility; knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures.
