Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Assistant Director of Building Operations and Fraternity and Sorority Life (GA153) in the University Center & Student Activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Upchurch University Center. This includes scheduling all event set-ups in the center, hiring, training, and supervising the Set-Up Crew, and providing support to the supervision of the student staff in Upchurch. Additionally, the candidate will collaborate closely with housekeeping and facilities management, serve as an advisor to the Interfraternity Council and its chapters, and assist with various office programs. The Assistant Director is a member of the Student Engagement Unit within Student Affairs. This unit includes professional staff members specializing in Education and Prevention Programs, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Multicultural Affairs, and the University Center and Student Activities. Collectively, this team strives to provide transformative learning opportunities in a diverse and inclusive environment, enabling all students to develop the skills, competencies, and attitudes necessary to become engaged citizen leaders. This position is considered emergency personnel, which requires the selected candidate to report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, an emergency, staff shortage, etc.
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
University Center and Student Activities:
Coordinate all room set-ups, manage equipment inventory, and organize maintenance schedules.
Knowledge and understanding of the technology in the Upchurch University Center; troubleshoot as necessary and check on the equipment at least once a week.
Assist with recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising the student staff at the Upchurch University Center.
Train student staff on the use of Trello for daily building responsibilities and assess their performance based on defined learning outcomes.
Review student staff reports daily and share relevant information with the appropriate staff members and/or campus departments.
Provide building coverage and room set-ups after hours, as needed.
Support regular feedback opportunities regarding the Upchurch University Center from facility users and students.
Provide support and oversight to non-social Greek letter student organizations and groups, especially those with a new member process.
Serve on planning committees for New Lancer Days, First Friday Back, and The G.A.M.E.
Fraternity and Sorority Life:
Work with individual Interfraternity Council (IFC) chapters and advise the IFC, including coordination of the IFC Exec, Recruitment IFC Bid Day, new member education program and processes, supervision of the IFC Lodge, and such programs as Men's Health Week and the annual flower sale fundraiser
Serve as the Fraternity and Sorority Life liaison for campus outreach efforts, e.g. First Friday Back, The G.A.M.E., etc.
In coordination with the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life:
Create procedures to help council and chapter leaders identify and implement goals and objectives consistent with the University mission and values of the Greek community and for other Greek-letter student organizations
Work with campus chapter advisors to define roles and responsibilities; create in-service training opportunities and provide resources to advise fraternities and sororities collaboratively
Respond appropriately to emergencies and violations of university policies and local, state, and federal laws that involve members of the Greek community. Communicate with appropriate University staff and office, particularly the Longwood Police and Student Conduct and Integrity office
Additional Responsibilities:
Establish widely publicized and some non-traditional office hours, including weekends, that provide access to students, faculty, and staff
Collaborate with the members of the Student Engagement Unit to plan and implement Late Night Breakfast, summer orientation, and Spring Weekend
Serve as a member of the Student Engagement Unit; attend staff meetings both within the Unit and with the University Center and Student Activities staff and participate in individual supervision meetings with the Director
Serve as a resource for campus programming
Participate in and contribute to University, Student Affairs, and Student Engagement committees, meetings, and professional development opportunities that address the program of curricular and co-curricular experiences as they relate to the Longwood student
Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with the laws, regulations, and policies of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Longwood University, and the American College Personnel Association Ethical Principles and Standards
Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean and Director of the University Center and Student Activities and Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, or the Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Initiatives
The duties of this position are such that a flexible schedule including some night and weekend hours is necessary
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Higher Education, Leadership, Student Personnel, or related area preferred
Two to four years progressive responsibility within Student Affairs
Knowledge of and experience with building operations, student staff supervision, public relations, and event coordination
Graduate Assistantships will be viewed as qualifying experience
Technical expertise, knowledge and experience with 25Live, Trello, and Social Tables
Knowledge of student development theory
Availability to work an irregular schedule including evenings and weekends
Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds as well as move tables, chairs, staging, etc. for room setups

This position is a full-time, administrative and professional, exempt position. A successful fingerprint based criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
