Assistant Director of Financial Aid

The University of Virginia’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) is seeking a dynamic and service-oriented Assistant Director of Financial Aid to support adult learners through effective scholarship management and student-centered financial aid services. Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid, this role plays a key part in enhancing access to education by managing scholarship programs, improving communication processes, and contributing to institutional financial aid initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Scholarship Management
  • Administer SCPS scholarship programs in collaboration with Program Directors, University Student Financial Services, and external partners.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of scholarship awards in compliance with University and SCPS policies.
  • Develop and implement new scholarship programs to meet evolving student needs.
  • Maintain accurate records and reporting for all scholarship activities.


Communication Management
  • Manage all communications related to scholarship opportunities and award notifications for applicants and recipients.
  • Evaluate and improve current award notification systems and processes for greater efficiency.
  • Coordinate the collection and distribution of scholarship acknowledgements to sponsors, donors, and advancement representatives.
  • Support admissions and marketing teams with financial aid-related messaging as needed.


Customer Service
  • Provide timely and professional responses to inquiries from prospective and current students regarding scholarships and financial aid.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource for students navigating the financial aid process.


Outreach and Representation
  • Represent SCPS and the University at financial aid conferences, forums, and outreach events.
  • Collaborate with other departments to deliver presentations and workshops for prospective students.


Policy and Process Improvement
  • Stay current with SCPS and University financial aid regulations, policies, and initiatives.
  • Participate in committees and working groups to share insights and develop best practices.
  • Contribute to institutional efforts aimed at improving financial aid processes and student experience.
  • Continuously assess and refine internal procedures to enhance operational efficiency.


Other Duties
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support the mission and goals of SCPS.


Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: At least four years of progressively responsible experience in higher education financial aid. Preference will be given to candidates with experience serving adult learners or non-traditional student populations.


Preferred Qualifications and Attributes:
  • Experience using Slate, Academic Works, and Peoplesoft.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Curious, creative, and efficient.
  • Open to experimentation and process optimization.
  • Personable and flexible, with a strong commitment to student service.


About the Position:

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA and offers a hybrid work schedule. The incumbent will be required to work on site as needed and requested for meetings and/or other programmatic needs. This is a full-time, exempt level, benefited position with UVa benefits . Employees benefits package highlights include:

The anticipated salary for this position will be commensurate with education and experience. This position will remain open until filled but preference will be given to applications received by May 30, 2025. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
