The Writing and Rhetoric Program at the University of Virginia invites applications for two Assistant Professors of English, general faculty, beginning August 2025. This is a three-year, tenure-ineligible appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon available funding, satisfactory performance, and need for the positions.

Responsibilities will include teaching three courses per semester, typically two first-year writing courses and one intermediate or advanced writing or rhetoric course, and departmental service. Assistant professors on the general faculty, after serving for six years, become eligible for promotion to the rank of associate (tenure-ineligible) and afterward to full professor (tenure-ineligible).

    Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Writing Studies, or a related field, or an MFA in Creative Writing is required for this position. Applicants must hold a terminal degree at the time of appointment.

We prefer applicants with experience teaching composition/first-year writing as well as experience or interest in teaching intermediate and advanced Writing or Rhetoric courses that may contribute to our new minor in Public Writing and Rhetoric. We are also interested in applicants with administrative experience in a Writing and Rhetoric-focused program.

Ideal applicants will demonstrate a commitment to supporting and developing diverse communities. Teaching expertise in the following areas is desired but not required:
    • working with diverse student groups (e.g. first-generation students, low-income students, veterans, students of color, non-traditional, neurodiverse, and LGBTQ students).
    • developing student experiences in digital writing and media.
    • creating community engagement courses and partnerships.

The Writing and Rhetoric Program is part of the English Department. It is a growing, energetic program whose faculty have a rich range of educational backgrounds and interests.
