About this position
The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking a Assistant Superintendent.
This is a classified 12 month position with state benefits, including health insurance, retirement, life insurance and disability coverage.

The Education Administrator III at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind (VSDB) serves as the chief operating officer of the school side of VSDB, with direct responsibility for academics, residential life, student health and well-being, and transition services. This inward-facing role manages the day-to-day delivery of high-quality programs, supervision of principals and directors, student support, and compliance with state and federal requirements.

By focusing on internal operations, the Education Administrator III enables the Superintendent to concentrate on outward-facing agency leadership, advocacy, and partnerships. The Education Administrator III also works closely with Admissions and Family Engagement to strengthen family connections and ensure student success. In the Superintendent’s absence, the Education Administrator III serves as the acting school leader to ensure continuity of leadership and decision-making.

The Education Administrator III at VSDB is to provide quality educational and residential services to students with sensory impairment who are referred by the local school divisions and to serve as a resource for children with similar disabilities educated throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The working conditions of the Education Administrator III at VSDB is a primarily campus-based role with high visibility among students, staff, and families. Regular interactions with staff, students, and families across all program areas. Some evening and weekend responsibilities for school events, family engagement, and student activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations related to areas of assignment, to include administrative functions, and educational and vocational programming for students with disabilities.

Ability to develop collaborative community relationships for consumers, families, advocates and other professionals.

Ability to plan, prepare and implement a comprehensive budget.

Effective managerial skills that include collaboration, consultation, delegation of authority, timely and accurate completion of required activities and positive professional /interpersonal relationships.

Ability to interact appropriately with the media, the VSDB Board of Visitors, the Virginia Department of Education, the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and other regulatory, professional and human service agencies.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent to ensure effective operation and continuous improvement of VSDB.

Must hold a Virginia license in school administration or supervision (Virginia Code §22.1-294).

Master’s degree in education, administration, or a related field required.

Minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership in K–12, special education, or school administration.

Proficiency level of Advanced in American Sign Language (ASL) as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) preferred. Candidates without the required proficiency level will be required to participate in approved ASL instruction with documented progression each year.
