Associate and/or Senior Associate Director, Philanthropic Partnerships, Cancer Programs

The University of Virginia Health Development Office seeks an Associate Director and/or Senior Associate Director, Cancer Programs to join our collaborative, high-achieving, and enthusiastic team in support of the continued success of the University's Honor the Future campaign.

Responsibilities will include identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding prospects and donors as part of UVA Health Development and the larger University community, with an emphasis on discovery and patient prospect identification that builds the major gift pipeline. The incumbent will primarily work with physician leaders, faculty, administrators, and development colleagues to advance the philanthropic priorities of UVA Health. The incumbents are responsible for identifying prospective patient donors and creating appropriate fundraising strategies that comply with the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Responsibilities may include serving as a lead contact for Department Chairs, Division Chiefs, UVA Health faculty and care providers, and other staff for specific programs and working collaboratively with other colleagues to staff the broad range of UVA Health priorities. The incumbent will report to the Executive Director, Cancer Programs.

Responsibilities include building key internal relationships with faculty and healthcare providers to developing funding priorities, arranging site visits, providing stewardship for gifts received, managing faculty training, staffing key faculty, providing initial outreach to prospective patient donors, and related work that advances the strategic priorities of UVA Health.

The Associate Director, Cancer Programs will:

Work alongside development officers and clinical faculty to identify grateful patients and families and other donors through outreach to current donors, past donors, and referrals. Establish a consistent presence within assigned key partners to create a culture of philanthropy. Partner with development officers in delivering on individualized strategies for the successful engagement of faculty and patients across all sub-specialties and a thoughtful plan for timing and coverage of all assigned departments or divisions for engagement and development initiated referrals Evaluate HIPAA-compliant patient data for physicians and development officers in assigned programs and identify potential grateful patient prospects for further research and cultivation. Work closely with development officers and UVA Health partners to prepare needed information to share with potential donors and advance relationships for UVA Health. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of institutional priorities including research, care, and education in order to translate these topics of focus into compelling funding opportunities. In collaboration with UVA Health Development Communications team, translate research and center campaign priorities and needs into compelling written and electronic content, including proposals, case materials, and presentations. Guide faculty through philanthropic process by developing strategy for identified patients and writing sample communications. Maintain a strategic and collaborative relationship with development officers, UVA Health Development leadership, donor relations and stewardship, communications, and appropriate University Advancement staff (e.g.: gift planning, annual giving, gift accounting) to develop and implement fundraising strategies in order to meet established goals and objectives. Serve as main point of contact for the UVA Cancer team for key partnerships and discovery opportunities including:

The Senior Associate Director, Health Partnerships will (in addition to the responsibilities listed above):

Oversee the workflow for both development officer referrals and physician referrals, ensuring the highest priorities are met. Provide regular reporting on the outcomes of the program to Health Development leadership. Facilitate development’s contributions to Department Annual Review goal setting and reporting process in collaboration with UVA Health Development leaders.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least four years of experience in health care, working with faculty, or fundraising is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop relationships of trust and respect with a diverse range of constituents, including healthcare providers, health leaders, research faculty, administrators, donors and prospects, and development colleagues
  • High emotional intelligence, empathy and ability to relate to providers who are providing care
  • Highest ethical standards and attention to confidentiality when dealing with donor and patient information
  • Ability to actively listen, analyze information/situations and solve problems
  • Ability to take a proactive approach; organize and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and adapt to changing priorities
  • Thoughtful approach and sound judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to employ entrepreneurial approaches to meet deadlines and consistently achieve/exceed goals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of initiative and ownership with a strong orientation to teamwork

  • Ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports such as donor data, prospect contacts, solicitations, and proposals

  • Ability to travel is required, as well as occasional evening and weekend work


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Robust understanding of principles of health care, philanthropy, higher education, healthcare philanthropy and relationship management
  • Knowledge of current best practices in grateful patient fundraising
  • Previous work in or familiarity with an academic medical center or healthcare environment
  • Experience in a collaborative environment/matrixed organizations also preferred


This job will be filled at either the Associate or Senior Associate level, depending on the successful candidate's experience, knowledge, and competencies. The ideal candidate at the Associate level will have at least four years of previous health or faculty-related or fundraising experience, a proven track record of managing collaborative relationships, the ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports. The ideal candidate at the Senior Associate level will have at least seven years of previous health or faculty-related or fundraising experience, a consistent, demonstrated track record of managing high-level relationships towards organizational goals, the ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports, and proven experience in managing and developing strategies for specific programs.

Salary Range(s):

Associate Director: $75K - $85K

Senior Associate Director: $85K - $95K

This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. This position will remain open until filled and will not sponsor for work visas. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
