Associate Director/Director*, Commercial Development, Medicines for All

Medicines for All (M4ALL), a part of Virginia Commonwealth University, is an entrepreneurial, impact-oriented institute dedicated to dramatically improving global access to lifesaving medicines. We achieve this through synthetic process innovation and advanced technology deployment to reduce costs and waste in small molecule drug substance manufacturing. Our work supports treatments for diseases such as TB, malaria, HIV, oncology, metabolic diseases, CNS, and immunology.

The Associate Director/Director of Commercial Development will be the first leader in this role, responsible for establishing and building the commercial function from the ground up. This role will design and implement strategies for market development, business growth, and partnership cultivation, ensuring alignment with M4ALL’s mission and long-term vision. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in business development and commercial strategy within the pharmaceutical or life sciences sector, with experience in creating and scaling commercial functions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


1. Commercial Strategy and Function Development
  • Establish and lead the Commercial Development function, setting the strategic vision and creating foundational processes for client engagement, partnership development, revenue and margin growth, and optimal utilization of M4ALL service assets.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive market strategies that align with M4ALL’s mission and expand its impact within the pharmaceutical sector.
  • Design and implement key performance metrics and reporting frameworks to evaluate commercial effectiveness and growth.

2. Business Development and Market Expansion
  • Identify and cultivate new business opportunities, building relationships with industry stakeholders, clients, and potential partners.
  • Conduct in-depth market research and competitor analysis to position M4ALL’s offerings effectively and identify growth opportunities.
  • Develop strategic plans to enter new markets and enhance M4ALL’s market share, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and operational goals.

3. Partnership Development and Client Relations
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients, serving as the primary point of contact and ensuring satisfaction with M4ALL’s services.
  • Develop partnership models and collaboration agreements that support long-term growth and align with M4ALL’s objectives.
  • Represent M4ALL at industry events, conferences, and forums to increase brand visibility and establish M4ALL as a thought leader in sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing.

4. Revenue Generation and Financial Oversight
  • Develop revenue generation strategies, including pricing models and service offerings that align with M4ALL’s value proposition and industry standards.
  • Work with finance to set revenue targets, monitor commercial performance, and adjust strategies to meet or exceed financial goals.
  • Report on revenue, business development efforts, and market trends to executive leadership, providing insights for strategic decision-making.

5. Team Building and Leadership
  • Build and lead a high-performing Commercial Development team, establishing a collaborative culture focused on business growth and impact.
  • Mentor and develop team members, setting clear goals and supporting their professional growth.
  • Develop training and onboarding programs to ensure team members are equipped to support M4ALL’s mission and commercial objectives.

6. Marketing and Brand Positioning
  • Oversee the development of marketing materials, presentations, and client-facing documentation that effectively communicate M4ALL’s offerings and mission.
  • Collaborate with communications and marketing teams to develop brand positioning and awareness campaigns that support M4ALL’s impact-driven objectives.
  • Establish a strong, consistent brand presence across all commercial touchpoints, enhancing M4ALL’s reputation within the pharmaceutical industry.

7. Continuous Improvement and Innovation
  • Continuously assess and refine the commercial strategy to stay ahead of market trends and ensure alignment with M4ALL’s goals.
  • Implement best practices and process improvements within the Commercial Development function to optimize efficiency, enhance client satisfaction, and maximize revenue.
  • Leverage data and analytics to assess the success of commercial initiatives, making data-driven decisions for ongoing improvement.

8. Strategic Collaboration
  • Partner with internal stakeholders, including finance, operations, and program teams, to align commercial strategies with organizational priorities.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on market trends, client feedback, and growth opportunities.
  • Engage with industry networks and organizations to keep M4ALL at the forefront of industry trends and opportunities.
