Job Duties

This position is responsible for implementing the Boating Safety Education Program at the region level through the implementation of the agency’s boating safety education program. This includes providing classroom courses, managing volunteers, and participating in outreach events. Provide guidance on policies and procedures to volunteers and region staff. All efforts will be directed towards helping reduce recreational incidents, injuries, and fatalities associated with recreational boating. Support the agency’s mission and the boating safety education compliance law in Virginia and the requirements set forth in the US Coast Guard grant and memorandum of agreement. Assist in the development and implementation of a safety program for paddle sports participants to including training (hands on and classroom) and outreach to mitigate safety concerns with paddle sports participants. Assist with agency with recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) efforts for boating as well R3 efforts regarding fishing, and wildlife watching while boating/paddling. Develop partnerships with organizations and businesses around boating (including paddle sports) and boating access in DWR Regions 2 and 3.

The successful candidate will reside within 60 miles of Lynchburg, Virginia or Marion, Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate would:
• Possess knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment
• Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s license
• Possess strong organizational skills
• Possess strong interpersonal skills
• Demonstrate good communications skills, both verbally and in writing
• Be able to speak in front of groups, both extemporaneously and from prepared materials
• Demonstrate knowledge and ability to use computers and related software, including Word, Excel and the ability to learn new computer programs and/or software

The successful candidate must pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check, DMV check and game/fish/boat history check. The successful candidate must be able to become a boating safety instructor within 6 months of hire.

Additional Considerations

• Experience with train the trainer programs
• Understanding of the principles and practices of boating safety, including paddle sports safety
• Experience in outreach program planning, delivery, and evaluation
• Experience in working with volunteers, managing staff, or managing programs
• Completed college course work in the studies of education, human resources, outdoor recreation, natural resources, or related field.
