Seeking qualified individual to repair, maintain and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operation standards. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date.

In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices. Skill in the use of carpentry tools, concrete forming and finishing methods, fabricating steel components and welding. Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment (e.g. dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, track-hoe, etc.), as well as in the use of hand and power tools. Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools. Ability to perform heavy manual labor, work at heights, in moving traffic, over and in water and under other adverse conditions. Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts. Ability to work well individually and as a team member. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to obtain certifications in work zone safety, flagging, chainsaw safety, First Aid and CPR.

Additional Considerations

Experience in bridge maintenance and construction. Experience in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding. Experience in operating an excavator, track hoe with bucket or hoe-ram in constricted areas of work sites. Possession of valid CDL.

Valid driver’s license and safety shoes requires. Ability to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and DOT medical card within 3 months of employment. Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Fingerprint-based criminal history background check, DMV driving record check, pre-employment physical, drug screen, references, and work history will be required prior to employment. Applicants selected for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
