About the Job: The Behavioral Services Unit (BSU) of the Department of Juvenile Justice has an opportunity for you to do what you do best as a Psychologist. DJJ is seeking to hire a qualified Psychologist Senior to join our talented team of Behavioral Services professionals located in the Central Admissions and Placement Center.
This position will conduct psychodiagnostic evaluations of committed youth at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center and detention centers throughout Virginia, as well as provide short-term interventions to youth. The incumbent may be called upon for consultation regarding juveniles with significant cognitive or mental health challenges. The incumbent will provide evidence-based psychological evaluation and treatment services to residents in order to promote their well-being and rehabilitation as well as reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Populations served may include male and female juvenile offenders, with significant mental health challenges and/or developmental delays. The service needs of this population may include mental health, sex offender treatment, substance use, and/or aggression management treatment. The primary duties of this position will include conducting comprehensive psychological evaluations and utilizing evaluation results to assist in identifying appropriate treatment needs and intervention strategies for each resident. Additionally, conducting specialized assessments of risk for reoffending, in order to provide guidance as part of the judicial review process for serious juvenile offenders, is a core job duty. The candidate will consult/collaborate with clinical peers, psychiatry, case management, correctional center staff, facility administrators, court service units, and outside agencies related to assessment, treatment, crisis intervention, and planning for continuity of care when a resident is about to transition to the community. Additional duties may involve participation on various institutional committees and attending continuing professional education. Opportunity for limited telework is available.

Upon hire, new employees to the Commonwealth of Virginia will be offered a sign-on bonus of $5,000. The sign-on bonuses will be paid in two installments: one installment upon hire and the second after the successful completion of six months.

The selected applicant for this position is subject to a background investigation and pre-employment drug screen.
As a requirement for employment, the chosen candidate for this position must be able to commit to an initial basic skills training, which is a three-week academy held at the Virginia Public Safety Training Center in Hanover, Virginia. The training program will consist of classroom academic instruction, skill-based classes, practical application, and scenario-based sessions. The basic skills training is typically scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of psychodiagnostic assessment, psychopathology, crisis intervention, and psychotherapy. Candidate must have skills are in the areas of administering and interpreting objective and projective tests, interviewing and psychotherapy techniques, and report writing. The ability to utilize good clinical judgment, be well-organized, follow directions, work independently, function as a team member, and communicate well both orally and in writing is also needed.
Additional Considerations
DJJ takes great pride in hiring employees who possess a Ph.D. or Psy.D. In Clinical or Counseling psychology. Considerable experience in conducting psychological evaluations and experience in providing psychological services to the juvenile delinquent population. Licensure as a Clinical Psychologist is preferred. Prefer additional certification by the Department of Health Professions as a sex offender treatment provider (CSOTP).
