Job Description

Laboratory Specialist (part-time, 1500 hour wage employee) assists with set up and break down of laboratory exercises for undergraduate microbiology related laboratories This position is responsible for preparing media, solutions, and reagents used in the microbiology teaching laboratories, assisting the laboratory manager and the laboratory coordinator with equipment maintenance as needed, and assisting graduate teaching assistants during class time and/or faculty instructors as requested.

This 1500 hour position is a part time position where a total of 1500 hours is worked over a year. The bulk of this time occurs from the end of August to the first of May with a typical workload ranging from 30-40 hours per week between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm. The hours will be reduced during the summer months.

Required Qualifications

- Working knowledge and experience using common laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, balances, pH meters, microscopes and spectrophotometers.
- Experience with the preparation of media, reagents, and solutions that are used in the microbiology teaching laboratories.
- Experience and knowledge of microbiological laboratory principles, procedures, techniques, and safety regulations.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to accurately and concisely provide direction to the graduate and undergraduate students who use the teaching laboratory facilities and classrooms.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor of Science degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related discipline.
- Experience working in teaching labs.
- Must be able to work independently with limited instruction, and with a team.
