Job Duties
Project Development and Coordination
• Work directly with communities, Planning District Commissions, and regional partners to identify and refine project concepts
• Assist in developing project scopes, timelines, and implementation strategies
• Coordinate with multiple partners to support complex or multi-jurisdictional initiatives
• Help advance projects from early concept through funding and initial implementation
• Manage a portfolio of projects at various stages of development and implementation
Funding Strategy and Grant Support
• Identify federal, state, philanthropic, and other complementary funding opportunities
• Assist communities and partners in preparing competitive grant applications
• Coordinate with contract grant writers during periods of high proposal activity
• Support development of funding strategies that combine multiple funding sources
Regional Engagement and Partner Support
• Maintain regular communication with local governments, regional organizations, and institutional partners
• Support collaboration among stakeholders involved in project development efforts
• Provide practical guidance to communities navigating complex funding and project requirements
TRRC Coordination and Support
• Support TRRC operational and programmatic priorities as appropriate, maintaining alignment between Commission priorities and Foundation-supported activities
• Coordinate with TRRC leadership and staff to ensure project development activities complement Commission investments
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications and Experience
The Commission seeks professionals with experience in project development, community and economic development, and grant funding strategies within regional or multi-jurisdictional environments.
Professional Experience
• Experience in economic development, regional planning, community development, or a related field
• Experience working with local governments, Planning District Commissions, or regional organizations
• Demonstrated experience supporting or preparing grant applications, particularly for federal or state funding programs
• Experience coordinating projects involving multiple partners or stakeholders
Knowledge and Skills
• Strong understanding of project development processes and funding strategies
• Ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate diverse stakeholders
• Strong communication and facilitation skills, particularly in multi-partner or multi-jurisdictional settings
• Ability to translate project concepts into actionable plans and funding strategies
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Willingness to travel regularly throughout Southern and Southwest Virginia to engage with communities and partners
• Professional experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree desired; graduate degree in planning, public administration, economic development, or a related field preferred
