Southeastern Virginia Training Center (SEVTC) is seeking a Compliance and Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist to lead and oversee our Health Information Records department.
In this essential role, you will ensure the accuracy, security, and regulatory compliance of medical records and health data systems. The position plays a key part in maintaining the integrity of resident documentation and supports a high standard of care within our facility.

About the Role
This position is considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency or facility need. All SEVTC positions are required to work different shifts and/or overtime as requested.
Supervise daily operations of the Health Information Management department.
Ensure accurate and timely data entry of event reports and verify completeness.
Ensure record filing is accurate, timely and meets Medicaid regulations.
Coordinates and conducts quantitative record audits for compliance and assists with qualitative audits as needed.
Ensure accurate, timely scanning of documents into the electronic health record.
Coordinates and conducts quantitative record audits for compliance and assists with qualitative audits as needed.
Ensure accurate data entry of the census and admission/discharge Avatar data.
Assists providers with coding for labs as needed.
Ensure coding is consistent with all coding requirements and Medicaid/Medicare regulations in addition to third party payers.
Conduct billing and documentation audits; prepare and submit monthly audit reports.
Maintain annual physical database to ensure physicals are completed in accordance with Medicaid and maintain database of all current established diagnoses.
Processes requests for protected health information (PHI), ensure authorization compliance, assist with HIPPA audits.
Ensure the electronic health record documentation meets all regulatory standards.
Skills and experience required:
We seek a candidate skilled in collecting and analyzing data and preparing reports or presentations. We also seek the following:

Valid Virginia driver’s license.
Knowledge of privacy laws, access, release of information and the Freedom of Information Act.
Experience working with data protected by HIPAA.
Knowledge of Virginia records management and retention procedures and schedules.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Exceptional attention to detail.
Prior experience leading or supervising staff.
Bonus points if you have:
Bachelor’s degree in health information management or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Prior experience working in a health information management department.
Advanced proficiency Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification or coding specialist credentials preferred.
