Computer Based Testing Facility (CBTF) Director

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost is seeking highly qualified applicants for the role of Computer-Based Testing Facility Director, reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.

The Provost’s Office advances academic excellence at all levels of the University. As the chief academic officer, the Provost is responsible for UVA’s teaching, scholarship, and research at the schools, library, art museums, numerous centers and institutes, and international study programs, as well as faculty recruitment and retention.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Program Leadership & Institutional Alignment

• Provide strategic leadership for the Testing Facility as it evolves from a pilot into a sustainable university assessment service supporting undergraduate education.
• Advance the Testing Facility’s core commitments to excellence in teaching, academic integrity, access, and evidence-based assessment through effective operations, planning, and stakeholder collaboration.
• Serve as the primary operational liaison to the Provost’s Office, ITS, and participating schools.
• Communicate with Student Disability Access Center (SDAC) leadership to ensure appropriate University supports for testing accommodations.
• Engage a faculty advisory group and a student advisory group on the operations and planning of the Testing Facility.
• Engage UVA school leaders to identify opportunities for collaboration and expansion of Testing Facility services.
• Lead planning for phased expansion of services, informed by peer models while remaining responsive to UVA’s student population, course structures, and assessment culture.
• Manage Testing Facility budget.

Faculty Engagement & Institutional Partnerships

• Develop and disseminate timely, consistent communication regarding exam setup, scheduling, and policies to faculty and school leadership.
• Partner with instructional designers in participating schools to support faculty in aligning assessment design with available platforms, accessibility requirements, and evidence-based academic integrity practices.
• Facilitate onboarding for new faculty participants and connect them with relevant school-based and Testing Facility resources.
• Oversee faculty- and staff-facing communications, including Testing Facility website.

Facility & Space Management

• Oversee Testing Facility locations and coordinate cross-functional planning with the Steering Committee and IT, space, and academic stakeholders.
• Working in partnership with IT and Space colleagues, ensure new Testing Facility spaces are designed to support a range of assessment types and academic needs.
• Establish and maintain standard operating procedures for space use, security, emergency response, and exam transitions in collaboration with relevant University units.
• Provide guidance and leadership to the Testing Facility staff and proctoring team who ensure room readiness, compliance, and exam‑day logistics.

Scheduling, Logistics, & Exam Operations

• Oversee centralized exam scheduling across facility spaces, balancing faculty requests, student accommodations, seat utilization targets, and staffing capacity.
• Coordinate logistics for high‑volume and peak‑demand testing periods, ensuring equitable student access and operational resilience.

Staff Management & Workday Administration

• Manage Testing Facility staff, providing direction, performance guidance, and support for operational coordination across facility locations.
• Ensure effective practices to recruit, train, schedule, and supervise proctors and other Testing Facility student staff.
• Use Workday to manage payroll, time approval, and employment actions, ensuring timely and accurate compensation.
• Develop scalable staffing models and training programs in collaboration with relevant University partners.
• Establish clear escalation pathways and professional standards for proctor conduct, communication, and incident response.

Technology Coordination and Planning

• Coordinate with ITS to ensure effective support for relevant software, lab hardware, and networks, as well as incident response to ensure a secure, reliable testing environment.
• Contribute to long‑term planning for Testing Facility technical infrastructure, reliability, and scalability.
• Maintain expertise regarding the digital platforms used in the Testing Facility.

Risk Management, Compliance & Evaluation

• Ensure operations comply with institutional policies related to data security, student privacy, academic integrity, and accessibility.
• Oversee documentation and continuous improvement of procedures for exam administration, incident response, and student appeals related to testing disruptions.
• With institutional partners, support evaluation, reporting, and continuous improvement of Testing Facility services.
• Engage in national conversations about University-level assessment practices, stay current on emerging trends and peer practices, and represent UVA’s Testing Facility in professional networks and related forums.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's Degree required
• Experience: 5+ years of relevant professional experience required, ideally including higher education experience or academic support

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree
• 6+ years of relevant professional experience
• Experience with Prairie Test/Learn and Canvas
• Experience with a computer-based testing facility

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Salary Range

The anticipated hiring range is $90,000 to $100,000 commensurate with education and experience.

• This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
