Job Duties
Corrections Officers contribute to the agency’s public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates by ensuring effective and safe custody and control along with compliance with policy and procedure. This is successfully accomplished through the use of evidence-based practices and principles that enhance effective communication strategies and role modeling as part of collaborative multi-disciplinary teams addressing offender needs. Officers provide security over adult inmates at the institution and while in transport; supervise the daily activities of inmates while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement. They interact with the visitors, staff, inmates and public to maintain orderly and secure operations.
The Intelligence Officer in our Centralized Mail Distribution Center provides security and safety of DOC facilities by screening legal mail, magazines, newspapers, and religious materials for contraband; ensures the handling of all mail within applicable federal, state and departmental regulations and procedures; maintains all related documentation and reports; investigates all suspicious items received and/or observations of crimes or violations of laws, rules, regulations and policies; reports incidents to the Special Operations Drug Task Force and/or Special Investigative Unit as outlined in DOC policy; and assists the Mail Distribution Center Investigator in all security mail screening operations.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or a GED equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Stable employment history and former corrections officer experience. Current or former DCJS certification, where certification can be reinstated by attendance at in-service and range.
Working knowledge of criminal investigation methods and techniques. Skill in interviewing suspects and witnesses to obtain pertinent data. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation. Ability to operate and interpret X-ray screening equipment. Ability to secure and preserve crime scene evidence. Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Must be able to lift bags and bulk packages weighing up to 50 pounds, place and retrieve documents/packages from shelves approximately six feet high. Must be able to push a wheeled carrier with mailbags and packages not exceeding 50 pounds. Must also be able to stand, walk and sit for extended times and distances.
Additional Considerations
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Office programs.
