Diagnostic Medical Physicist

The essential responsibility of the Medical Physicist in clinical practice is to assure the safe and effective delivery of radiation to achieve a diagnostic or therapeutic result as prescribed in patient care as directed by the Chief Medical Physicist. The Medical Physicist performs or supervises the technical aspects of procedures necessary to achieve this objective throughout the Health System. Additional responsibilities of the Medical Physicist include: protection of the patient and others from potentially harmful or excessive radiation; assists in the establishment of adequate protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry; the measurement and characterization of radiation; the determination of delivered dose; advancement of procedures necessary to ensure image quality; development and direction of quality assurance programs; and assistance to other health care professionals in optimizing the balance between the beneficial and deleterious effects of radiation; and compliance with applicable Federal and State of Virginia regulations. In this role the Health System refers to but is not limited to UVA Imaging Culpeper/Novant Augusta and Orange facilities.

  • Performance of acceptance testing calibration and safety surveys of imaging equipment.
  • Consultation with the radiologist concerning patient or fetal doses assistance with dosimetry and imaging and localization studies.
  • Consultation with other physicians and patients regarding radiation exposure and safety.
  • Teaching and presentation of continuing education programs for medical students radiology residents graduate students physicians nurses technologists ancillary personnel and other staff as necessary to be safe and compliant with current practice and standards.
  • Ensures Accreditation of modalities as directed by Chief Diagnostic Medical Physicist.
  • Development implementation and supervision of quality control programs in the radiology.
  • Membership or participation in applicable committees such as the Safety Committee the Radiation Safety Committee Radioactive Drug Research Committee Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Committee Human Investigations Involving Radiation Exposure (HIRE).
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $155,854.40 - $249,371.20 Annual

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master’s Degree

Experience: 1 year experience.

Licensure: Qualified to become a Private Inspector State of Virginia X-ray inspection program. Must be American Board of Radiology (ABR) Diagnostic Medical Physicist certified or completion within 2 years following date of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive) and driving. Proficient, communicative, excellent auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to radiation.
