Job Description:
Housing and Residential Life, a unit supervised by the Vice President for Student Affairs, provides services and programmatic direction for all residential students. The Director of Housing and Residential Life is responsible for managing all aspects of Radford University’s residential system, which encompasses 15 residence halls and off-campus apartments housing approximately 3,000 students. The Director provides innovative leadership focused on the personal growth and development of a residential community that aligns with the mission of the institution, advances the strategic plan and emphasizes the significant impact housing and residential life have on a thriving and engaged campus. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Provides leadership for facilities management, assignments and occupancy management, residence life, educational programming, and assessment activities and is a partner related to conference services and dining. In addition to daily operations, the Director is responsible for strategic planning, emergency planning, and partnering to move the housing program from a centralized budget model to one that is decentralized.
  • Serves as a primary partner in the support, education, experiences and resources available and offered for families and the development of Welcome Weeks and provides strategic leadership related to off-campus student housing.
  • Extensive collaboration and cooperation with key units on campus such as Enrollment Management, the academic colleges, Finance and Administration, and Facilities Management,
  • Play an integral role in student retention and success efforts on the campus.
  • Serves as a member of the Division of Student Affairs Leadership Team, participates with the Student Affairs Executive Team upon request and as appropriate and works to sustain and promote the division’s goals.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration or comparable field
  • Minimum five years of progressive professional experience in Housing, Residential Life or Student Affairs; with at least 3 years in a supervisory capacity with proven effectiveness
  • Evidence of strong and innovative leadership in building community that contributes to the University’s overall success as well as exceptional skills demonstrated in decision making, critical thinking and crisis management are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, direct and evaluate complex housing operations using people-power, time, funds and other resources for the accomplishment of long-term and short-term goals of the University.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management.
  • Proficient with computers and technology.
  • Record of effective communication skills and communication with all university and community constituents and stakeholders.
  • Record of and commitment to cultivating objective and compassionate communities.
  • Demonstrated (broad) background and knowledge of housing and residential life operations.
  • Must relate well with students, faculty and staff.
  • Solid knowledge and application of student development and leadership theories.
  • Ability to provide strategic direction and leadership of high-level divisional or university-wide committees.
  • Experience with assessment and making data-driven decisions.
Additional Considerations:

  • Terminal degree with preference for individuals in higher education, student development, or other relevant programs.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible administrative and leadership experience in student housing and residence life in a college or university setting.
  • Experience as a director of housing and/or residential life in a college or university setting
  • Proven above-average supervisory skills
  • Previous experience leading an administrative on-call rotation
  • Experience providing strategic direction and leadership of high-level divisional or university-wide committees.
  • Experience leading the development of facilities, student engagement initiatives, and programming models.
  • National level experience as a leader in area(s) related to housing and residential life, student affairs and/or student success
