Development Directors manage development efforts for a unit or small school. They are responsible for planning and creating fundraising strategy, including major gifts, planned giving, annual giving, stewardship, events, and foundation fundraising. In addition, they manage their own portfolios and cultivate and solicit major gifts. They represent their school or unit across Grounds, both within the development community and to University leadership. Development Directors typically supervise a team of Development staff and are responsible for ensuring that their goals are met. Development Directors typically report to senior fundraising officers or Executive Directors.

The University of Virginia seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and experienced fundraising professional to fill the role of Director of Development, University Library in University Advancement. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Corporate Philanthropy, Foundation Relations, and Gift Planning, the Director of Development will oversee a complex program of philanthropic activity centered around UVA’s libraries. In conjunction with University Advancement fundraising colleagues, the Director of Development will design and manage a Library fundraising strategy that supports the discovery of new donors and helps build a pipeline of major gift prospects for the University and the Library.

Key responsibilities:
  • Manage the Library Advancement team (four FTEs as direct reports).
  • With direction and guidance from the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, the Library’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and the Associate Vice President, Corporate Philanthropy, Foundation Relations, and Gift Planning, develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan for the University Library to include special events, communications, annual campaigns, and major gift strategies in support of the Library’s fundraising priorities, including renovation of Shannon Library, increased funding for collections, and initiatives that enhance accessibility.
  • Collaborate with the Library’s curatorial staff relating to donations of tangible personal property, including archival materials, artwork, historical collections, and other items and materials.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of current and prospective major-gift level donors ($100K+) and create personalized strategies to move them toward giving levels that achieve the University’s annual and long-range fundraising goals.
  • Create personalized strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals within his/her portfolio.
  • Work closely with University Advancement to coordinate messaging and communications.
  • Collaborate with fundraisers across the University to build relationships with alumni, parents, and friends, and design and implement coordinated cultivation and solicitation plans for prospects and donors.
  • Coach and lead development officers, creating and maintaining a culture of learning and inclusion within the Library team.
  • Travel nationally to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects.


Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: Eight years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least five years of direct experience in non-profit or higher education fundraising.
  • Prior experience fundraising for academic and research libraries.
  • Prior experience staffing senior leaders and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, sales, or managing relationships with high-net-worth individuals.
  • Exceptional communication skills, a high degree of personal integrity, and the ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details.
  • Track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative, flexibility, and the skills to shape and be shaped by an evolving fundraising initiative.
  • Experience using data to evaluate and plan.


The successful candidate will have the ability to travel frequently domestically and participate in occasional evening and weekend work. A valid driver’s license is also required.

UVA Advancement offers a flexible and hybrid workplace. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. Depending on the type of position and work performed, or as deemed by a manager, some positions may be required to work intermittently in a shared office space located in Charlottesville, Virginia.

This position is an exempt level, benefited position. This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. The anticipated hiring range is $110,000 - $130,000 and will be commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
