The International Studies Office (ISO), a division of UVA Global , is a University -wide resource which contributes to UVA's global mission through activities, programs and services designed to support the development of a globally aware, culturally diverse education and research environment. Through the International Students and Scholars Program, UVA Education Abroad, the Lorna Sundberg International Center, and the Center for American English Language and Culture (CAELC), the ISO provides expertise and infrastructure to help expand and sustain global education at the University of Virginia.

Position Summary

The International Studies Office (ISO) is currently accepting applications for an Education Abroad Advisor & Outreach Coordinator. The ISO is a division of UVA Global, a University -wide resource that contributes to UVA's global mission through activities, programs and services designed to support the development of a globally aware, culturally diverse education and research environment. Through the International Students and Scholars Program, UVA Education Abroad, the Lorna Sundberg International Center, and Center for American English Language and Culture, the ISO provides expertise and infrastructure to help expand and sustain global education at the University of Virginia.

Responsibilities

Half of this position’s time will be dedicated to education abroad advising and managing a portfolio of programs, and the other half in coordinating outreach events and activities.

As Education Abroad Advisor, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide advising, referral, and information services for UVA students interested in study or academic internships abroad, including goal setting, selecting programs, identifying sources of funding, building cross-cultural awareness and mitigation of risks
  • Maintain expertise in Higher Education systems of an assigned region of the world and oversee a portfolio of programs and exchanges in the region
  • Assist in developing and promoting UVA study abroad programs, oversees program admissions, administer program enrollment, ensures students' compliance with registration and transfer credit requirements, and provides pre-departure guidance, including visa support where applicable
  • Maintain relationships with an assigned school of the University


As Outreach Coordinator, the successful candidate will promote education abroad opportunities. Outreach responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage digital and hardcopy publications, social media, website, and other communications as needed
  • Coordinate fall and winter study abroad fairs
  • Coordinate representation at class presentations, tabling, and other promotional events such as the Days on the Lawn, Summer Orientation Resource Fairs, Family Weekend, and Global Week
  • Represent Education Abroad at the International Events Forum and other committees as assigned
  • Collaborate with UVA in Valencia faculty and staff to attend study abroad fairs to recruit for the program
  • Collaborate with Senior Education Abroad Advisor to organize intern participation in outreach events
  • Supervise the Education Abroad social media intern
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed.


Candidates are required to possess knowledge of principles and issues of study abroad advising, including the ability to advise students considering studying abroad. Candidates must also possess strong oral and written communication skills, including intercultural and interpersonal communication. The ability to interact with study abroad program representatives, colleagues in other offices, faculty and students in a highly professional manner with an understanding of protocol and confidentiality is essential. Evidence of strong organizational, administrative, and computer skills is required . Knowledge of NAFSA: Association of International Educators professional ethics and competencies is desirable along with knowledge of the Forum on Education Abroad Standards of Good Practice is preferred. The position requires occasional domestic travel for study abroad fairs and conferences, and international travel for site visits or program support.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required . Experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Three years of student advising or program coordination experience is required if a bachelor's degree is held. Seven years of student advising or program coordination expected if a bachelor's degree is not held.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required .


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience studying abroad and at least four years of student advising or program coordination experience, or an Advanced degree in relevant subject matter is preferred.
  • An MA degree in a relevant field (International Education, Intercultural Relations) is preferred.
  • Experience living internationally and competency in a foreign language are highly preferred.
  • Experience working with student information systems, education abroad platforms such as Terra Dotta (TDS), and graphic design platforms (such as Canvas) is also preferred.


Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
