The University of Virginia is built on a district energy model managed by Energy and Utilities within Facilities Management, with one main heat plant, three combined heating/cooling plants, nine chiller plants, hundreds of miles of piping distribution, and an internal medium voltage electrical distribution grid anchored by three 35kV to 13kV substations. E&U serves over 18 million gross square feet of learning, research, residential, and support space across a geographically dispersed 1175 acres.
The University of Virginia's Facilities Management - Energy and Utilities - Power and Light team is seeking an
Electrical Engineer. This position will work in a variety of facilities, operations, and all aspects of the University. Engineers may specialize in one or more of the many concentrations within the engineering profession as they relate to Energy & Utilities. The incumbent will demonstrate the ability to work on and with all members of the team as well as the ability to apply engineering principles, knowledge, experience, and technical expertise to support the development, installation, and operations of University infrastructure, specifically within Energy & Utilities.
Duties Include:
- Apply engineering principles, knowledge, experience and technical expertise to support the development, installation and maintenance of University infrastructure - Work may occur in a variety of facilities, operations or other areas of the University.
- Manage and receive assistance from Engineering Technicians, and report to supervisors when necessary or if needing approval.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable standards and specifications in their area of concentration.
- Collaborate with leadership, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Environmental Compliance Manager to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Monitor and instruct sound practices to ensure a safe working environment.
- Perform quality control of work and evaluate facilities, products, tests, etc. for compliance with University needs.
- Design and manage any alterations, renewals, or additions.
- Investigate problems and make recommendations to prevent reoccurrences.
- Assign and monitor staff performance in the management of engineering detail work.
- Provide technical guidance and instruction for employees with clear expectations, so that training programs yield highly skilled workers.
- When applicable, provide professional customer service by promptly responding to work orders and establishing acceptable resolutions to concerns.
- Research background information on projects, formulate plans, present work with clarity for approval, develop design documents, and respond to requests during construction.
- Procure and manage contract services when needed.
- Operate appropriate machinery and other equipment during execution of assigned work orders, developed designs, research requirements, etc.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent degree in electrical engineering or related engineering field and 4 years of related engineering experience.
OR
Master’s degree or foreign equivalent degree in electrical engineering or related engineering field and 2 years of related engineering experience.
Prior experience must include experience with:
- NEC, IEE and other applicable industry codes and standards.
- Ability to perform arc fault calculations; familiarity with SKM Power Tools.
Professional Engineering License required, or ability to achieve licensure within 6 months by comity.
Compensation:The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $109,408 to $120,513 Annually, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands: This position is primarily office-based but requires occasional travel to on-site locations, which may involve walking, climbing stairs, or navigating uneven terrain. The role may occasionally require lifting materials up to 20 pounds and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
