Job Description:

Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. Reynolds is committed to hiring and retaining a diverse, culturally competent staff at all levels of the organization who reflect the demographics of our students. We also believe in providing an ongoing investment in our faculty and staff to deepen their skills and competencies to serve the full range of our student population.

Reynolds seeks an Employer Coordinator, Biotechnology (ECB) to serve as the primary representative of Reynolds Community College’s biotechnology programs to industry, government, economic and workforce development, higher and elementary, secondary, and adult education, and the greater Richmond region. The ECB will represent Reynolds Community College on the APM-Biotechnology Intermediary team, serving as the spokesperson for the college’s credit and workforce programs in biotechnology. The position will interface directly with life science and biotechnology employers in the region, acknowledging their needs and translating those needs back to the college’s biotechnology programs. The ECB will work directly with academic leadership at the college to ensure these needs are incorporated into a continuous feedback loop that ensures Reynolds’ biotechnology programs remain nimble and relevant to the current and emerging workforce trends of the region’s life science and biotechnology cluster.

Additionally, this position will be on a team of five full-time employees who lead the Richmond-Petersburg APM and Biotechnology Workforce Sector Partnership. The Partnership’s primary mission is to develop a workforce ecosystem in support of the Greater Richmond MSA’s growing life sciences and Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing industry.

The ECB will serve to meet this role objective with the following duties:

  • Develop strategic workforce solutions to meet the current and emerging needs of biotechnology and life science employers in the region.
  • Meet with regional leaders in industry and government to research the current and emerging workforce needs including in-demand occupational roles, current and projected job openings, hiring schedules for biotechnology and life science companies, and the skill sets, credentials, and education requirements for technician-level biotechnology employees.
  • The ECB will translate this information back to Reynolds’ academic leadership creating a continuous feedback loop that ensures program relevancy.
  • Advise and support the development of programs and initiatives that would expand life sciences and biotech learning into K-12 education, informal education such as museums and summer learning camps, and workforce programs for career switchers and incumbent workers.
  • Represent Reynolds’ biotechnology program at Coalition meetings and other state and regional workforce development convenings that are dedicated to strengthening the region’s biotechnology talent pipeline.
  • Conduct business outreach to employers who might have an interest in biotechnology education and training pathways at Reynolds, seeking to increase career opportunities for students who complete Reynolds’ program.
  • Work with program faculty, recruitment and enrollment professionals, to support student recruitment, enrollment, credentialling, and job placement.
  • Convene internal and external workforce stakeholders to support the alignment of program outcomes to industry needs.
Minimum Qualifications:

Strategic Thinking. You can effectively synthesize a range of information sources and viewpoints to drive toward a desired outcome. You are able to effectively leverage data to drive decisions but also can recognize when data is insufficient and other approaches are needed to complement a data-driven approach. You can understand the details but keep an eye on the big picture.
Project management. You have experience building complex initiatives that involve multiple systems and stakeholders. Bonus points if you have worked in industry.
Excellent written and oral communication skills. You can effectively communicate with a diverse set of stakeholders through a variety of channels (e.g., meetings, memos, decks, and phone calls). You can clearly and effectively communicate about sensitive and complex topics. You can listen with intentionality, and translate conversations back to stakeholders who can take action.
Cross-functional coordination skills. You have the ability to work effectively within multiple cross-functional teams, understanding how to influence colleagues in other roles and with differing perspectives.
Management experience. You are adept at managing cross-functional teams to execute at a high level of quality against plans, and communicating about your work to stakeholders, community members, and organizational leadership.
Adaptivity and creativity. You can make progress in changing circumstances, especially within a start-up environment. You know when and how to change course, bringing people along with you. You enjoy finding creative solutions to challenging problems and relish the opportunity to learn.
Familiarity with workforce initiatives. You have general knowledge of the workforce landscape in Virginia and understand the key players and initiatives in place.
Additional Considerations:

We are seeking an experienced professional with at least 3-5 years of biotechnology/life science workforce experience to drive this effort.

Each agency within the Commonwealth of Virginia is dedicated to recruiting, supporting, and maintaining a competent and diverse work force. Equal Opportunity Employer
