Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Performs all functions necessary to support each semester’s Engineering and Mechatronics labs including: preparing and cleaning up for each laboratory, ordering materials, maintaining inventory, maintaining equipment, maintenance of all policies, procedures, and quality assurance practices with a particular emphasis on safety. Provides instructional assistance in laboratories and, in the absence of the instructor, proctors exams and provides instruction for short durations. Instructs students and faculty in the proper use of laboratory equipment and materials, as well as lab safety.
Minimum Qualifications:Experience working in an engineering laboratory. Experience using laboratory equipment such as, but not limited to, 3D printers, conventional machining equipment, CNC machines, PLCs, laser and water jet cutters, or other similar devices. Experience adhering to safety protocols in a laboratory setting; Experience working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Knowledge of basic principles of Engineering and Engineering Technology. Knowledge of fabrication techniques such as machining, 3D printing, water jet cutting, laser engraving, etc. Knowledge of regulatory guidelines regarding the conduct and safety of engineering laboratories; effective oral and written communications skills including the ability to explain technical, procedural, and safety information to students; a strong desire to be in the academic environment where students are the primary focus; a positive attitude towards faculty and students and the desire to work with a team of highly motivated instructors; the ability to perform basic clerical duties (e.g., filing, record keeping, preparing requisitions, etc.); the ability to maintain orderly storage rooms. Proficient in PC Windows-based operating environment and related software. Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment and meet the needs of a broad spectrum of stakeholders. Willingness to work with various departments on campus and with industry partners; commitment to student success and to the mission of the community college. Must be able to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Additional Considerations:Substantial experience working in an engineering lab and instructing students regarding safe and effective use of equipment. Experience purchasing and maintaining Engineering Laboratory equipment and supplies; experience managing laboratory budgets; experience writing and/or managing grants; experience with eVA, the Commonwealth of Virginia purchasing system.
