Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.

This mid-level epidemiologist position supports the enhanced/syndromic surveillance program within the Office of Epidemiology, Division of Surveillance and Investigation. This position has a primary focus of ensuring the availability and quality of near real-time syndromic surveillance data from emergency departments and urgent care centers used to identify and monitor events of public health concern across Virginia. Responsibilities include recruitment of healthcare facilities to report syndromic surveillance data to the Virginia ESSENCE system, conducting data analysis and dissemination using data management and analysis tools (SQL, R, Tableau), participating in surveillance activities, and consulting on scientific and technical issues. Positions in this role will coordinate data quality efforts and projects to include, interpreting program policies and procedures, training staff, communicating with stakeholders, monitoring and reviewing data collection/analysis for accuracy and consistency, and serving as a program consultant. Positions in this role work under the limited supervision of a lead epidemiologist, program manager, or similar position and perform assignments independently, making determinations about the scope and direction of program planning, research and investigation, based on agreed upon direction and institutional review board approval, as needed. Typically, the work completed is reviewed for feasibility, conformance to program policy and practices, and effectiveness in meeting specific goals and objectives.

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the ELC and Overdose to Action Grant for a 5-year (60 month) period ending 07/ 2027. The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable and other conditions of public health importance.
Considerable knowledge of methods of public health surveillance.
Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease.
Working knowledge of biostatistics, computer data analysis, and data management techniques.
Demonstrated ability to develop program or project goals and objectives and to evaluate program or project effectiveness.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Demonstrated ability to collect, quality assure, analyze, and present statistical data.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with health care professionals and the general public.
Experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related area.

Additional Considerations

Demonstrated knowledge/experience in public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics.
Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others either in a supervisory or project management capacity.
Basic knowledge of statistical software packages.
