Job Duties
•Candidates with prior equipment repair training and experience may be hired as an Equipment Repair Technician (Equipment Services Repair Technician 1 – pay – band 3), and the salary offered will be commensurate with experience.
•Candidates with limited experience are hired as an Equipment Repair Technician Trainee (Equipment Services Repair Technician I – pay – band 3, $40,963). After satisfactory completion of a 12-month full-time Equipment Repair Technician Trainee Training Program, employees who successfully pass the Training Program will progress to an Equipment Repair Technician (Equipment Services Repair Technician 1 – pay – band 3) and will receive a 10% salary increase. This training period may be extended, and the total training period cannot exceed 18-months.
•Experienced candidates who are not placed in a trainee status are not eligible for the 10% salary increase.
About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Equipment Repair Technician Trainee – Install in our Communications Division at our Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The Equipment Repair Technician Trainee is assigned to a 12-month training program to learn processes and procedures related to the installation, removal, and repair of police, communications and other electronic equipment in Virginia State Police vehicles. Specific areas of training center on how to diagnose, repair and service a variety of vehicles; remove components and equipment from wrecked/surplus vehicles; to equip new vehicles by installing police, communications and other electronic equipment; to repair and refurbish police, communications and other electronic equipment for installation in other vehicles; to assist with keeping the facility clean and orderly; to run errands; and to perform other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
•Must have knowledge skills and/or the ability to learn how to diagnose vehicles. •Skill in the use of computers and basic software programs including Word and Outlook. •Must be able to learn to safely use shop, woodworking and mechanics hand tools. •Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team. •Ability to pay close attention to detail. •Ability to communicate effectively in English with Agency personnel. •Ability to learn equipment installation procedures and techniques associated with police, communications, and other electronic equipment; and to learn to read and comprehend automotive and equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, and other related written documents. •Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance. •Ability to work in a hot or cold environment, outdoors, around moving machinery, noise, dust, gas, and fumes. •Must be able to work overtime as needed. •Experience in automotive repair, electronics, electrical, or mechanical fields. •Valid driver’s license required. •High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Additional Considerations
•Experience reading and comprehending automotive or mechanical installation/repair manuals preferred.
