Job Description

The Executive Director for Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S) is responsible for the oversight and daily operations of the Network Infrastructure and Services organizations. Network Infrastructure and Services is comprised of the Telecommunications Auxiliary, a $24M+ annual cost-recovery operation, and the Data Center program, which includes the support team administering compute and storage resources, as well as managing the data center facilities. As the leader for these units, this position must understand the broad scope, scale, and responsibilities of the overall Information Technology organization. Overseeing a workforce of over 100 employees, the Executive Director reports directly to the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO and functions as a member of the Information Technology leadership team.

The Executive Director will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction for all NI&S organizations. The position will be responsible for managing the financial, operational, and technical aspects of the organizational units. The Executive Director will work with the units to establish strategic direction, set priorities, communicate objectives and deadlines, ensure there is coordination across all units, and ensure that activities align with the priorities of the division of IT, and the university.

This position is located out of the Blacksburg campus and is eligible for a hybrid working arrangement.

Required Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in management, computer science, math, engineering, OR bachelor’s degree and training which equates to a master’s degree.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with computing and network engineering and administration concepts, methodologies, and security practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing networking and telecommunications units.
  • Demonstrated experience managing data center facilities.
  • Solid understanding of network protocols, wireless/wired authentication, network management systems, network monitoring systems, and firewalls.
  • Strong and established interpersonal, communication, and supervision skills, and the ability to work in groups.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and provide detailed analytical information and progress reports to superiors.
  • Proven ability to formulate written documentation and present detailed reports to various audiences, both internal and external to the university.
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices for resource management, business analysis, and technical assessment.
  • Working experience in overseeing and managing multiple strategic initiatives simultaneously.
  • Committed to supporting and promoting a diverse and inclusive community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of and experience with computer and network systems, including high-volume storage and high-performance computing devices, for research and enterprise applications and databases.
