Job Duties

Norfolk State University’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art History position. Application review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Art History. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of curriculum development, innovative teaching and support The James Wise Gallery with developing art exhibition themes, and educational programming such as panel discussions, art seminars, symposia, and artist talks among other educational activities for undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts offers two undergraduate degree programs in the areas of Fine Arts-Graphic Design and Art Education, and a graduate MFA Visual Studies degree program. The James Wise Gallery, located in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, supports academic programs with exhibitions and educational programming.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

· PhD in Art History or relevant areas (completed degree is required at the time of application).

· Evidence of teaching experience at a comprehensive four-year college or university.

Additional Considerations

· Experience in online teaching (i.e., Blackboard and Canvas)

· Teaching experience in contemporary art history courses with the ability to incorporate critical theory and practice within a global context or marginalized history is preferred.

· Evidence of active research and publication in peer reviewed journals in the candidate’s area of expertise.

· Demonstrated knowledge of working with a diverse student population.
