Job Duties

The mission of George Mason’s Gunston Hall is to stimulate the exploration and understanding of principles expressed by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights.

This position works closely with the Executive Director or head of Curatorial Affairs to manage the maintenance and repair of George Mason's Gunston Hall, out buildings, museum, office space, archives, homes, and additional museum facilities on the 550-acre property. The Facilities Manager also leads, coordinates, and manages all capital and maintenance projects in conjunction with the Executive Director; creates a safe and secure physical environment; maintains the successful functioning of all mechanical, electrical, IT, and other facility systems; and ensures the buildings are impeccably maintained.

Incumbent is Responsible for

• Manage all maintenance work of George Mason’s Gunston Hall, out buildings, museum, office space, archives, homes, and additional museum facilities on the 550-acre property:
• Develop, implement, and manage the unit's budget.
• Monitor Gunston Hall’s physical plant including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing,
electrical and mechanical systems, IT, utility usage, and structure and roofing.
• Perform hands-on maintenance work as needed.
• Conduct regular inspections of the buildings and grounds to determine maintenance needs and make recommendations for improvements and repairs.
• Work closely with the Commonwealth of Virginia to complete and provide required reports and documentation, and to maintain accurate and current files.
• Develop and implement 5- and 10-year plans for building maintenance.
• Plan and coordinate all building and system inspections and certifications.
• Help ensure the security and safety of people and facilities including serving as a first responder in the event of an emergency, the custodian of keys and locks, and the primary liaison with all security and fire system technicians.
• Monitor, implement, and update as needed Gunston Hall’s Emergency Response Plan and serve as the organization’s Emergency Operations Coordinator.
• Currently supervises the Horticulturalist, Gardener and Groundskeeper.
• Manage all Capital and maintenance projects on the campus including coordinated work with the COVA, architects and engineers, contractors, staff and volunteers, guests, and the local community.
• Participate in the development of the Capital budget.
• Work with events staff and volunteers on preparations for special events, including but not limited to, moving and setting up tents, tables, and chairs.
• Manage the preparation and installation of signage.
• Obtain quotes for outside vendors as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Working knowledge of the following building trades and equipment: electrical, plumbing, boilers & HVAC, carpentry, masonry, plaster and painting and finishes.
• Considerable working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety procedures applicable to maintenance and construction work.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills.
• Ability and skill providing and supporting exemplary customer service.
• Exceptional organizational skills.
• Self-motivation with a positive attitude.

Additional Considerations

• Experience with historic sites, museums, cultural organizations, and/or parks is preferred.
