About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a First Sergeant Attorney in our Office of Legal Affairs at our Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate provide legal advice to the executive staff of the Agency and limited legal advice to the Superintendent of State Police and Bureau Directors when needed; conduct legal research and prepare legal summaries; maintain current up to date knowledge of legal developments and to pass this knowledge on to employees through teaching at Basic and in-service schools, preparing manuals and discussing issues with VSP employees; prepare legislative and policy proposals; review memorandums of understanding; serve as a Department liaison on committees; and serve as liaison to the Attorney General's Office for both criminal and civil issues affecting VSP.

Minimum Qualifications

•Considerable knowledge of Supreme Court rulings, current case law, and knowledge of statutory law related to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (VFOIA) and criminal law; of the Virginia and United States judicial systems; of the operations of the Virginia legislative and executive branches of government; of Human Resources rules and regulations and of the Fair Labor Standards Act; and of the most up to date applications of search and seizure and laws of arrest.
•Skill in legal research and writing and analysis; and in the use of a computer and Microsoft Office.
•Demonstrated ability to analyze information, prepare complex reports and correspondence; to maintain excellent working relationships within the Agency, and externally with other agencies and groups; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
•Graduation from an accredited law school.
•Licensed by the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners at the time of hiring.
•Must be able to practice law by the Supreme Court of Virginia by the time of hiring.
•Maintain mandated continuing legal education of 12 hours per year.
•Prior experience as a criminal prosecutor or related legal background.
•The incumbent selected for this position will be required to obtain and maintain the certifications of a sworn Virginia law enforcement officer as established by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services that includes successfully completing a 26-week Trooper Basic Session and complete field training.

•Prior or current experience as a law enforcement officer is highly preferred.
