About the Agency:

The Virginia Department of Military Affairs State Team provides professional and responsive state support functions to the Adjutant General of Virginia, the Virginia National Guard, the Virginia Air Guard, and the Virginia Defense Force in order to ensure their ability to support and defend the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Fort Pickett is a medium-sized, Federal Installation of 41,000 acres, 2,000,000 SF of buildings and numerous ranges and is operated by the Virginia Army National Guard (VaARNG) for training Reserve Component, active Army, and other unit services. The Directorate of Public Works is responsible for the operation and maintenance of real property at the Maneuver Training Center, Fort Pickett, and The State Military Reservation located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.


Job Duties:

• Develops, maintains, and enhances habitats to support diverse wildlife populations; contributes to habitat and land management planning; ensures compliance with relevant laws and best practices.
• Leads and participates in habitat maintenance activities, including planting, manipulation, and contract work, aiming to meet at least 90% of annual goals through both individual effort and teamwork.
• Operates and maintains farm and heavy equipment; applies forestry, agricultural, and wildlife management techniques; supports development of prescribed burn and forest management plans.
• Conducts wildlife surveys, assists with hunts and banding efforts, performs fish stocking and sampling, maintains ponds, aquatic habitats, and hunting stands, ensuring timely, accurate reporting.
• Performs routine maintenance on fish and wildlife equipment, boat docks, signage, and launch points to support ongoing field operations and preserve facility readiness.
• Maintains records, completes reports on time, follows procurement guidelines, manages harvest documentation, and supports the department in meeting state, federal, and agency deadlines.
• Responds to public inquiries, distributes information, maintains kiosks, and participates in outreach and educational programs to promote agency goals and community involvement.
• Independently oversees daily operations of the Game Check Station and iSportsman system, enforces hunting regulations and access control policies, addresses customer concerns, and recommends improvements for operational efficiency.

This position is part-time and ineligible for state benefits. This position is limited to working 1500 hours per year.

Minimum Qualifications

Overall knowledge of Natural Resources and ecosystem management, ability to interact and work with the public;

Ability to understand and apply wildlife regulations; to implement field tasks associated with wildlife management and research projects with minimal supervision; and perform manual labor in varying climatic conditions;

Ability to comprehend policy and to follow procedures and prepare written reports, record keeping, strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written;

Must be computer literate;

Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required;

CPR/First Aid/AED certification required.

Additional Considerations

A commercial pesticide applicators license preferred.

Possession of a NASBLA recognized safe boating certificate preferred.

Experience with prescribed fire preferred.

Must be able to obtain a commercial pesticide applicators license within 12 months of employment.

Must be able to complete a NASBLA safe boating certificate with 12 months of employment.

Must be able to complete basic firefighter training S-130/190 within 12 months of employment.

Must obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).

This position is restricted, meaning the funding for this job is non-general and/or non-recurring.

Must have, and maintain, a valid Driver’s License for the duration of employment.
