Job Duties

The Forest Management Coordinator will provide leadership in the implementation of the Forest Management Goals in the DOF Strategic Plan. Major areas of emphasis are forest management planning, effecting implementation of a wide variety of forest management practices, reforestation, forestry assistance to and engagement of forest landowners, and restoration of diminished forest communities. The coordinator will provide direction and through the DOF regional structure, build agency capacity and expertise in implementing forest management practices. The coordinator will assess resource management needs and develop programs and initiative to deliver to meet these. The coordinator will partner and work with other resource cooperators, businesses, and agencies in forest management and program development and delivery. The coordinator will administer and manage multiple forest management programs, financial assistance programs, grants and assist in the administration of Code of Virginia sections, including the Reforestation of Timberlands Act, State Land Use Evaluation and Advisory Council, and Seed Tree Law. The coordinator will interact and collaborate with other DOF Branches, Regions, State Forests and Forestry Centers to further enhance and accomplish effective forest resource management.

Minimum Qualifications

- Extensive knowledge of forest management, silviculture, silvicultural practices, particularly as applied and practiced in Virginia. Knowledge of forest management programs. Knowledge of DOF field operations, practices, and procedures.
- Experience with and ability to perform and demonstrate forest management field skills
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage programs and initiatives
- Ability to organize multiple priorities and programs
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, prepare reports and proposals, track and administer budgets
- Ability to communicate effectively orally in the English language both in person and on the telephone. Ability in public speaking before audiences of all sizes
- Ability to work and engage with a wide variety of existing and new partners, groups, agencies, and organizations.
- Ability to prepare technical reports and grant proposals.
- Ability to make effective oral presentations on technical subjects and teach field personnel.
- Demonstrated skills with computers, Microsoft Office suite including email, Word, Excel
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods; bend, stoop, and reach to file, sort literature, etc.; and work with interruptions.
- Ability to identify, evaluate, and solve problems.
- Ability to negotiate different types of forested terrain, including difficult and adverse terrain on foot; lift up to 25 pounds to chest level
- During periods of emergency response, incumbent may have abnormal/ longer work periods and/or highly stressful situations may occur. Regular and reliable attendance required.
Virginia Driver's License. Virginia Certified Pesticide Applicators License or ability to obtain.

Additional Considerations

- Very extensive knowledge, skills, and abilities in forest management and silviculture, science, practice, implementation, and delivery.
- Ability with geographic information systems and mapping
- Ability and experience in training varied audiences.
- Knowledge of forest business practices
